Map of Stade

Archaeological finds from settlers in today's Stade area can be traced back to the Paleolithic Age. Around 650 AD, a fortified settlement with a ship landing was created. Until the 13th century, Stade was the most important natural port between Cuxhaven and Harburg and a strategically important place of transition over the Elbe. Stade already became a member of the Hanseatic League in its early days and from 1373 sent representatives to the Hanseatic Days.

Stade was the seat of the former government district of Stade and is therefore still home to many central institutions of the Elbe-Weser triangle. Stade consists of the city center and the four villages of Bützfleth (with Abbenfleth, Bützflethermoor, Götzdorf), Haddorf, Hagen (with Steinbeck) and Wiepenkathen. In contrast to other parts of the city, they have their own municipal representative bodies. The historic center, which is located on Schwingeinsel within the former ramparts, is surrounded by the moat. In the course of the rededication of the city fortifications to green spaces, the city grew along the exit streets at the end of the 19th century.

After the local elections in 1933, the NSDAP came to power in Stade with almost 41%, SPD functionaries were arrested, the KPD was banned and the democratic municipal constitution was repealed. On the sand in Stade there are memorial stones for the victims of National Socialism, stumbling stones in the city area remind of the deported and murdered people. Despite being expelled from the Hanseatic League in 1601, Stade has participated in the Hanseatic Days of Modern Times, a voluntary community of former Hanseatic cities, since the 1980s.

Today, Stade is an important industrial and service location in the Hamburg metropolitan region. With the "CFK-Valley Stade", Stade is also making a name for itself as a research and university location. Stade is also the center of the "Altes Land am Elbstrom" holiday region.

But despite all the adversities, an organ is the most important cultural and historical treasure today Restoration of the organ work by Jürgen Ahrend from 1990, it has its historical sound image again today. The interior of the church was restored in 1958-60 and 1991 and part of the old ceiling painting could be restored. The central point is the round altar, which is placed well in the middle of the church, i.e. exactly under the top of the tent roof. The latticework of the back wall of the altar with the tabernacle takes up the medal shape several times.
