Worpswede is a state-approved resort in Elbe-Weser triangle in the district of Osterholz in the middle of Teufelsmoor in Lower Saxony, North-east of Bremen. There are numerous cultural institutions, museums and galleries in Worpswede. The place is known for the Worpswede artists' colony founded in 1889 as a living and working community of artists.

1933 - 1945 Worpswede during the Nazi era
“An uncertain time dawned in the life and work of artists in 1933. Works were confiscated as "degenerate" and removed from museums. Paula Modersohn-Becker's pictures were one of them, but were shown nonetheless (1938 in Worpswede and 1943 in the exhibition "Lüneburger Land" in Berlin-Niederschönhausen). Bernhard Hoetger destroyed the first works of art in Bremen in 1933. Prof. Fritz Mackensen was appointed director of the new "Nordic Art Academy" in Bremen in 1933, which started in the spring of 1934. On November 1, the leave of absence came as a surprise and on March 31, 1935 he was released .
The National Socialists used their preferred art for propaganda purposes. Otto Modersohn and Fritz Mackensen received awards and their art was very popular. Over the years, artists became or tried to become members of the NSDAP and the Reich Chamber of Culture. Anyone who was not organized in the Reich Chamber of Culture had no way of obtaining work material via purchase vouchers and was confronted with an exhibition and professional ban. This situation turned artists into followers and supporters of the regime. Others suffered and became victims, seeking internal emigration, exile or even suicide. "

Already at the end of the last Ice Age, the peat moss had created the swampy Teufelsmoor landscape over the course of thousands of years. The Teufelsmoor with its mighty, three to four meter high layers of peat became one of the largest areas of raised and low moors in Germany. The name "Teufelsmoor" does not come from the devil, but from the Low German word for "deaf" and "sterile". "Duves" Moor became "Düwelsmoor", in High German "Teufelsmoor". The village of the same name, about 7 km from Worpswede, has its origins in the 14th century. The first documentary mention of the farming village Worpswede with 8 farms was in 1218. The name Worpswede means something like wooded hill. After the Thirty Years War, the Swedes took over military power in the area around Worpswede in 1630. Extensive drainage and colonization of the Teufelsmoor began around 1750. On behalf of George II of Great Britain, who was also the German Elector, Christian Findorff (1720-1792) was entrusted with the moor colonization as "royal moor commissioner". The country was gradually settled, and several villages sprang up all around. Findorff is revered as the "moor father" and the Worpsweders owe their church to him. The citizens erected the Findorff monument for him on the Weyerberg. In 2020 he will be in Worpswede with an extensive program celebrated.

The Worpswede artists' colony was founded in 1889, inspired by this special landscape with the brown sails of the peat barges on the Hamme and the wide sky over the Weyerberg. It was then that the artists decided Fritz Mackensen, Hans at the end and Otto Modersohnto settle permanently in Worpswede. The artists followed in 1893 Fritz Overbeck and 1894 Heinrich Vogeler. Paula Becker joined the group in 1898 and married Otto Modersohn in 1901. Arrived posthumously Paula Modersohn-Becker to fame and recognition. Today she is considered the most famous artist in the area and a pioneer of artistic modernism. With the generation of artists who came to the artists' village around 1920, Expressionism found its way into the Worpswede art scene. As a major German artists 'colony, Worpswede is now well connected internationally and a member of the European Association of Artists' Colonies, which was founded in Brussels in 1994 euroArt. Worpswede has been a state-approved resort since 1976. The artist village became a place for new models of life. In contrast to many other artist colonies, Worpswede has remained alive as a place of art. More than 130 local artists and artisans live on site, and scholarship holders from the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede provide additional new impulses. The townscape is characterized by extensive single-storey buildings with lots of green areas, with old oaks, beeches and linden trees and the birch-lined farm roads.

The landscape around Worpswede is diverse and extremely attractive. The extensive nature reserves give an impression of the original moor landscape. The vastness of the Hammeniederung is not just a backdrop, but a natural experience in itself. The Hammeniederung with the large flat water lake "Broad Water" is the last large-scale flooded landscape in northwest Germany. The renatured areas offer endangered animal and plant species a suitable habitat. The horror that the Teufelsmoor once had with its unsteady soils, treeless expanse, will-o'-the-wisps and regular large-scale floods, now gives way to the fascination for originality.

On the Hamme Worpswede can be reached by excursion boats and sports boats. From the Weser one arrives in Bremen-Vegesack on the Lesum to Ritterhude. Johann Heinrich Vogeler was commissioned by Theodor Garmann in 1905 to design an “apartment with a shop in a large village”. After completion, the merchant ran his hardware store here until 1918.   • 1  New Helgoland observation tower. The 9 m high observation tower Neu-Helgoland stands on the north bank of the Hamme just before the inflow of the Beek, about 500 m from the Hammehütte. It was built at the end of 2014 in an idiosyncratic form made of steel and offers a magnificent view of Worpswede, the Weyerberg and the nature and landscape of the surrounding area, such as the Hammeniederung, Teufelsmoor and the Breites Wasser nature reserve. The building is arranged around a rotunda with a suspended dome. Its skylight lets daylight into the room and enables indirect and even lighting of the works. The Great Art Show has been the largest exhibition space in Worpswede since its inception. You can see a selection of works by Worpswede's first generation of painters (Heinrich Vogeler, Otto Modersohn, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, Fritz Mackensen and Carl Vinnen). There is also an overview of the creative work of Bernhard Hoetger, the architect of the ensemble from the Großer Kunstschau and Kaffee Worpswede. The adjoining building of the former Roselius Museum from 1971 was extensively renovated and expanded in 2011 and has since acted as part of the Great Art Show with the main entrance area and shop as well as exhibition space for both face-to-face and changing exhibitions. Statues "expectation" in the mountain road
  • The one that looks like an eagle from a distance 18 Niedersachsenstein commemorates the soldiers from the region who died in the First World War. The 18 m high brick monument was completed in 1922 according to a design by the sculptor and architect Bernhard Hoetger, who also designed Böttcherstraße in Bremen, and is considered the only large expressionist sculpture in Germany.

Die Landschaft präsentiert sich vielfältig und überaus reizvoll. Sie ist stark durch weite, ebene Wiesen und Felder sowie Flussläufe, Kanäle, Gräben und Bäche geprägt. An verschiedenen Stellen vermitteln ausgedehnte Naturschutzgebiete dem Besucher noch einen Eindruck von der ursprünglichen Moorlandschaft mit ihren typischen, heute bestandsgefährdeten Pflanzen- und Tiergemeinschaften. Zu Fuß, mit dem Fahrrad oder auf dem Wasser der Flüsse und Kanäle öffnet sich das Teufelsmoor für Erlebnisse von Landschaft und Natur.

  • Die höchste Erhebung und gleichzeitig die größte Naturfläche in Worpswede ist der 54,4 m hohe 23 WeyherbergWeyherberg in the encyclopedia WikipediaWeyherberg in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsWeyherberg (Q2566309) in the Wikidata database, eine aus Sand bestehende Geestinsel. Auf dem und um den „Berg“ wurden jungsteinzeitliche Spuren gefunden: Steinwerkzeuge und Schmuckstücke. Aus 1100 v. Chr. wurden am Südhang „Hinterm Berg“ Urnengräber entdeckt.
Nach einer alten Sage wurde einst der Riese "Hüklüt" ins Teufelsmoor gelockt. Um nicht im Moor zu versinken, hatte er als Vorsichtsmaßnahme breite "Holschen" (Holzschuhe) an und Sand in seiner Schürze. Diesen verteilte er so, wie er auch seine Schritte setzte. Er versank dennoch und warf den Sand nach dem, der ihn ins Moor gelockt hatte. So entstand mitten im Moor der Weyerberg.
  • Im Ortszentrum liegt die 24 Marcusheide, ein wunderschöner Erholungsbereich. Das etwa 10 ha große Areal setzt sich aus offener Heidefläche und kieferbetontem, naturnah gehaltenem Wald zusammen. Es unterliegt dem Landschaftsschutz und ist gleichzeitig Erholungszone für die Bewohner und Gäste des Ortes. Eigentümerin der Marcusheide ist die Ruth und Helmut Middeldorf Stiftung. Sie kümmert sich gemeinsam mit der Stiftung Worpswede als Pächterin der Fläche um den Erhalt und die Pflege, unterstützt durch eine Heidschnuckenherde, die in regelmäßigen Abständen als natürlicher Heidepfleger zum Einsatz kommt.
  • The 25 Natur- und Geschichtspfad im OT-Hüttenbusch führt auf einer Länge von ca. 1 km vom Ort in die freie Wiesenlandschaft an der Schmoo. Entlang des Weges findet man Schautafeln, die über die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt und die besondere Geschichte dieses Geländes informieren Hier grenzen die typischen Landschaftsformen der Region Heide, Moor und Wald aneinander.

Nordwestlich, einige Kilometer entfernt, liegen mehrere ausgedehnte Naturschutzgebiete. Details zu den Naturschutzgebieten sowie Führungen bietet die Biologische Station Osterholz.. Von April bis Oktober kann man jeden Freitag und jeden letzten Samstag im Monat um 15:00 Uhr mit der BioS durch das Teufelsmoor wandern (Treffpunkt: Tourist-Information Worpswede):

  • in the 26 NSG “Torfkanal und Randmoore” sind Abschnitte des Hochmoores nach Beendigung des bäuerlichen Torfstichs mit einem Moorbirkenwald zugewachsen. Je nach Jahreszeit säumen Gagelstrauch, Rosetten des Sonnentaus, Glocken- und Besenheide die Wege ins Moor. In den wassergefüllten Torfstichen sind noch ausgeprägte Torfmoosrasen mit Wollgras zu sehen. Auf einer etwa 2-stündigen Führung kann das Gebiet erkundet werden.
  • The 27 Naturschutzgebiet “Breites Wasser” stellt den Kernbereich des großen Naturschutzprojektes in der Hammeniederung dar. Dieser Teil hat trotz erheblicher Beeinträchtigungen durch Flussbegradigung, Entwässerung und landwirtschaftliche Kultivierung noch einen herausragenden Wert vor allem als Lebensstätte typischer Tiere und Pflanzen der Feuchtniederungen.

  • The Kunstschule PAULA - lebendiger Galerieraum bietet Workshops nach Maß für Einzelpersonen, Familien oder Gruppen, Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene.
  • In the Malschule Worpswede im Museum am Modersohn-Haus (im ehemaligen Wohnhaus der Künstler Paula Modersohn-Becker und Otto Modersohn) kann man in kleinen Gruppen und mit viel Muße und Zeit kreativ werden.
  • Radfahren: Das Teufelsmoor ist ein Paradies für Radler. Auf vielen Routen unterschiedlicher Länge kann man das "platte" Land fast ohne Steigungen genießen. Eine sehr schöne Übersicht bietet die private Internetseite. Aber auch der Niedersachsen-Radroutenplaner hält ein paar Vorschläge bereit. The Webseite der Touristikagentur Teufelsmoor-Worpswede-Unterweser e.V. bietet ein gute Übersicht. Detailunterlagen, wie Routenvorschläge, Fahrradkarten und auch Miet-GPS-Geräte gibt es bei der Tourist-Information Worpswede.   • Führungen: In Kooperation mit dem Verein der Gästeführer Worpswede-Teufelsmoor e.V. veranstaltet die Tourist-Information für Worpswede regelmäßig interessante Führungen. Dabei werden unterschiedliche Interessen berücksichtigt, auch gibt es Führungen für Kinder.
  • Wandern: Im Teufelsmoor gibt es eine Vielzahl von wunderschönen Wanderrouten. Die Tourist-Information bietet nicht nur Informationsmaterial, sondern leihweise auch GPS-Geräte (GarminEdge Explorer) an. Dadurch ergeben sich Möglichkeiten, bei Spaziergängen und Wanderungen durch Worpswede und das Teufelsmoor die Besonderheiten des Künstlerdorfes und der Region ohne Landkarten zu erkunden, auch zum Geocaching. Die Tourist-Information veranstaltet auch eine Rätseltour durch Worpswede, bei der es darum geht, Fragen zu beantworten und somit die Koordinaten für das nächste Ziel zu enträtseln. Einige sehr interessante Rundwanderwege gibt es bei Komoot.
  • Bootstouren: Zu Worpswede und zum Teufelsmoor gehören natürlich die Torfkähne. Diese bildeten ab Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts die einzigen Verkehrsmittel im Teufelsmoor. Heute prägen die schwarzen Eichenholzboote mit den braunen Segeln wieder das Landschaftsbild. Bootstouren mehrerer Anbieter mit diesen Torfkähnen starten von Mai bis Oktober ab 10 Anleger Neu Helgoland. Die Fahrten lassen sich auch gut mit einer Fahrt mit dem Moorexpress, mit einer Wanderung oder mit einer Führung kombinieren. Hier eine Fotogalerie zum Thema Torfkähne.
  • Wasserwandern: Die Hamme und viele der kleinen Kanäle und Gräben sind ein ideales Revier für Kanusportler, auch für Anfänger. Wer möchte, kann sogar mit dem Kanu nach Bremen paddeln. Da oberhalb der Ritterhuder Schleuse kaum Strömung vorhanden ist, eignet sich das Gewässer auch hervorragend für ungeübte Paddler und Familien mit Kindern. Die Broschüre Wasserwandern im Teufelsmoor gibt es bei der Tourist-Information oder online zum Download. Auch der Landeskanuverband Bremen hat vielfältige Informationen. Wer kein Kanu dabei hat, kann sich dieses leihen bei:
  • Schwimmen: Wasser ist in der Teufelsmoor-Region allgegenwärtig. Die Wasserqualtät der Badegewässer im Landkreis Osterholz wird während der Badesaison von Mai bis September regelmäßig geprüft, die Ergebnisse werden veröffentlicht. Bademöglichkeiten gibt es:
  • am 6 Strandbad in Neu-Helgoland in der Hamme, Flussbadestelle mit Badesteg, typisch mooriges Gewässer, mooriger und sandiger Untergrund, seit 2014 immer "Ausgezeichnete Badewasserqualtität". Durch die im Wasser transportierten Schwebeteilchen hat das Wasser eine braun-schwarze Farbe und ist getrübt, da die Hamme ein Moorgewässer ist.

  • The 11 Golfclub Worpswede im 19 km entfernten Vollersode verfügt auf einer Fläche von 85 Hektar über einen 18-Loch-Golfplatz, eine große Driving Range mit 6 überdachten und 70 freien Plätzen sowie einen Pitch- und Puttplatz.
  • The 12 Golfclub Lilienthal e.V. im 9 km entfernten Lilienthal am Stadtrand von Bremen verfügt über einen 18-Loch-Golfplatz.
  • Rundflüge, Segelflug: Wer schon nicht mit dem eigenen Flugzeug anreisen kann, hat hier die Möglichkeiten einmal mitzufliegen. Auf den genannten Flugplätzen gibt es die Möglichkeit, Rundflüge zu unternehmen. Zusätzlich kann man sein Glück auch auf nahegelegenen Segelfluggeländen versuchen:
  • Boule: Eine öffentliche 15 Bouleanlage befindet sich in der Bergstraße / Ecke Lindenallee unmittelbar neben der Tourist-Information. Eine Reservierung ist nicht notwendig. Spielgeräte erhält man im Philine-Vogeler-Haus und im Hotel Village.
  • Tennis: Etwas außerhalb von Worpswede, im OT Neu St. Jürgen gelegen, bietet eine moderne 3-Feld-Tennishalle die Möglichkeit, spontan und kurzfristig Einzelstunden zu buchen.
  • Reiten: Im Umkreis von Worpswede bieten mehrere Höfe und Reitställe Reitmöglichkeiten, denn Niedersachsen ist Pferdeland. Viele aktive Vereine und Reiterhöfe bieten auch Feriengästen eine gute Anlaufstelle. Kontakte vermittelt die Tourist-Information.

  • Der kleine Wochenmarkt Worpswede findet jeden Samstag von 09:00 – 14:00 Uhr im Zentrum des Künstlerdorfes statt.
  • RAW-Phototriennale. Mobil: 49 (0)177 5613365, Fax: 49 (0)4792 9878920, Email: . Die RAW-Phototriennale fand im Frühjahr 2020 bereits zum dritten Mal in Worpswede statt. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie musste die Eröffnungsfeier ausfallen und die Ausstellungen Online (RAW-Frei Haus) präsentiert werden. Ab 08.05.2020 waren einige Ausstellungen wieder geöffnet. Das Festivalzentrum in der Worpsweder Touristik-Information war der Treffpunkt der Phototriennale. Die beiden Worpsweder Fotografen Jürgen Strasser and Rüdiger Lubricht präsentierten zeitgenössische Fotografie und Fotokunst an insgesamt 8 Standorten. Mittelpunkt des Fotofestivals waren Ausstellungen in den vier Museen und in der Bötjerschen Scheune. Geplante Veranstaltungen mussten entfallen.letzte Änderung: Dez. 2020
  • The Maimarkt findet jedes Jahr am 1. Mai auf dem Worpsweder Dorfplatz in der Bergstraße statt. Die Betreiber der Stände des Wochenmarktes bieten besondere Leckereien, Snacks und Getränke einschließlich der klassischen Maibowle an. Live-Musik ist auch mit von der Partie und sorgt für gute Stimmung.
  • Am offiziellen Mühlentag, Pfingstmontag, lohnt es, die alten Windmühlen anzusteuern, die man dann auch gleich besichtigen kann.
  • Unter dem Motto Offene Pforte öffnen sich private Gärten zu unterschiedlichen Terminen für interessierte Besucher.
  • The Worpsweder Schützenfest mit Festumzug, Königsball und Live-Musik wird obligatorisch im Juni gefeiert.
  • Unter dem Motto Offene Ateliers Worpswede steht das zweite Wochenende im Juli. Jeweils am Freitag, Sonnabend und Sonntag präsentieren viele der etwa 140 in Worpswede lebenden Künster ihre Werke. Sie öffnen einem kunstinteressierten Publikum ihre Ateliers und Werkstätten.
  • The Torftag wird alljährlich am 2. Wochende im Juli im OT-Ostersode (etwa 12 km, nördlich) und Umgebung gefeiert. Der Torftag im Kollbecksmoor will Erlebnisse und Informationen an Ort und Stelle zur Landschaft und Kulturgeschichte des Moores vermitteln. Für die Fahrt dorthin bietet sich der Moorexpress an, da Ostersode einen eigenen Haltepunkt hat.
  • The Erntefest steht traditionell am 1. Wochenende im September auf dem Programm. Highlight ist der Umzug mit den bunt geschmückten Wagen, die sich am Ortsausgang formieren und schließlich am Festplatz beim Findorffberg enden.
  • Der Worpsweder Bauernmarkt findet am zweiten Sonntag im September auf dem zentralen Dorfplatz in der Bergstraße statt mit einem vielseitigen und reichhaltigen Angebot an regionalen Produkten. Die Geschmackssinne kommen voll auf ihre Kosten. Außerdem finden sich in Handarbeit hergestellte Waren.
  • The Worpsweder Reitturnier am dritten Wochenende im September gehört zum festen Bestandteil im Worpsweder Terminkalender. Dabei darf das Ponyreiten als Begleitprogramm für Kinder nicht fehlen.
  • Der traditionelle Worpsweder Kunsthandwerkermarkt findet am letzten Wochenende im November im Worpsweder Rathaus statt. Kunsthandwerker präsentieren zusammen mit Gästen aus der Region ihre Arbeiten. Das Spektrum reicht von Textilem, Handgewebtes und Gesponnenes über Gold und Silber, Keramik, Glaskunst bis hin zu Porzellan, Holz und Stahl.

Natürlich gibt es in Worpswede auch die üblichen Supermärkte und Discounter. Diese haben sich in der Findorffstraße/Osterwederstraße angesiedelt. Interessant sind aber die außerordentlich vielen, kleinen, individuellen Geschäfte, z. B. der Kunsthandwerker und die vielen Galerien der Künstler.

Eine Texttafel und ein Porträt des damaligen Kunststudenten Fritz Mackensen neben dem Hauseingang verweisen auf diese Geschichte. Der Lage und der Größe Worpswedes ist es zu verdanken, dass die regionale Küche im Großen und Ganzen erhalten geblieben ist. Auch wenn die internationale Küche vielerorts Einzug gehalten hat, sucht man im Dorf die sonst überall vorhandene Systemgastronnomie vergebens, Fastfood ist hier unbekannt.

Landluft macht hungrig. Schon füher, als noch im Moor Torf gestochen wurde, musste man sich ordentlich stärken. Schon damals kam Buchweizenpfannkuchen auf den Tisch, und wenn man hatte, mit geräuchertem Schinkenspeck und Apfelkompott. Eine deftige Steigerung war und ist bis heute Bremer Knipp (Bregenwurst; heute aber ohne Bregen!) mit Bratkartoffeln und Gurke. Ein Moorbraten mit Pfeffersoße, Salzkartoffeln und Bohnen kann immer noch ein Festessen sein. Im Winter, nach dem ersten Frost, gibt es den deftigen Grünkohl mit Pinkel (Grützwurst), Kasseler und Kohlwurst. Im Frühjahr ist frischer regionaler Spargel mit geräuchertem Schinken beliebt.

Für die regionale Küche sind die „Hütten-Restaurants“ (Hammehütte, Melchers-Hütte und Tietjens Hütte) entlang der Hamme schon immer bevorzugtes Ziel gewesen. Diese waren einst historische Stationen, wo die Torfschiffer halt machten, um ihre Fracht zu verzollen, sich mit Proviant zu versorgen und eine Rast mit Speis und Trank zu machen. Hier kann man auch heute noch gemütlich auf Sonnenterrassen am Wasser sitzen und die regionalen Spezialitäten genießen.
