background

Ahrenshoop impresses with the unspoilt and beauty of nature between the lagoon and the sea, which already fascinated the painter Paul Müller-Kaempff and many other artists who founded an artist colony and painting school here around 1900. Ahrenshoop has water on two sides: on the one hand the Baltic Sea, on the other the Saaler Bodden.

Today's community Ahrenshoop is made up of the actual village of Ahrenshoop, which is located directly on the Baltic Sea coast and belongs to Darß, and the districts of Althagen and Niehagen, which are on the Bodden side and still belong to Fischland. The historical border between the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (or from 1934 to 1945 the State of Mecklenburg) and the Prussian province of Pomerania ran between the villages of Ahrenshoop and Althagen. The place is still marked today with a border post. Some local patriotic residents of Niehagen and Althagen still hoist the blue-yellow-red flag of Mecklenburg with the bull's head, while in the district of Ahrenshoop you can occasionally see the blue and white griffin banner of Pomerania.

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport with regular scheduled services is Rostock Laage. From there it is still 68 km to Ahrenshoop. There is no sensible connection with public transport to get there.

The Stralsund-Barth Baltic Sea Airport is a regional airport located near Barth with traffic approval, which is currently not served by scheduled flights, but only by high-priced private and charter flights. It is 38 kilometers by road from Ahrenshoop.

By train

The next rail connection is located 20 km to the south Ribnitz-Damgarten. Regional and IC trains stop there on the Hamburg – Rostock – Stralsund route. With the hourly bus 210 or taxi (approx. 40 €) you continue to Ahrenshoop.

By bus

The bus line 210 of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Nordvorpommern (VGN), which runs from Ribnitz station via Fischland, Darß and Zingst to Barth station and back, has several stops in Ahrenshoop. It takes half an hour to three quarters of an hour from Ribnitz. Timetable

During the summer season (mid-May to mid-September), the OstseeExpress runs every Saturday without changing from Dresden to Ahrenshoop (Niehagen or Dorfstraße). The return trip costs € 97. Timetable

In the street

Ahrenshoop is on the L21, the main road on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. This branches off from the B 105 (Rostock – Stralsund) at Ribnitz-Damgarten. From Rostock it is 45 km (journey time around 45 minutes), from Stralsund 65 km (approx. 1 hour). During the holiday periods, there are often long traffic jams, especially on Saturdays (arrival and departure days for most holiday apartments).

By boat

In the main season (mid-May to mid-September), the Oswald shipping company offers a daily scheduled trip from Barth via Zingst and Born and from Ribnitz-Damgarten to Ahrenshoop (Althagen harbor). Timetable

By bicycle

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route leads on the section Warnemünde - Darß - Stralsund also through Ahrenshoop. The stage from Warnemünde is about 38 km, from Barth 39 km.

mobility

In the center of Ahrenshoop itself, everything is within walking distance. If you are staying in Althagen or Niehagen or are planning excursions in the area, it is highly recommended to rent a bike. Some accommodations have bicycles for their guests themselves, otherwise there are various bicycle rentals in town. The usual rate is € 6–8 per day, although you usually only have to pay for five days instead of a whole week. There is no separate cycle path in the village itself, you either have to ride on the street or on a mixed footpath and cycle path. Special consideration for other road users is required here. It is better to drive on the top of the dike on the Bodden. The path is also a mixed pedestrian and bike path, but there are fewer pedestrians on the way. In bad weather you can take the hourly bus line 210 (in the main season partly with bicycle transport), which travels across the entire peninsula and has five stops in Ahrenshoop.
