mobility
Rail transport
- IC and ICE travel on the route Bremen-Hamburg / Harburg-Hamburg; regional trains also run.
- Connections of regional traffic are Bremen-Bremerhaven, Bremerhaven-Bremerhaven / Lehe-Cuxhaven, Cuxhaven-Harburg-Hamburg. Another stretch is Buxtehude-Bremervörde-Bremerhaven partly until after Cuxhaven.
Bus traffic / AST / local traffic
- The rail lines are supplemented by bus lines and collective call taxis. However, the connections between the sub-regions can be a bit cumbersome.
- The S-Bahn Hamburg runs to Stade, a similar train system to Bremen (Hanse network of the Metronom railway company).
- There is a well-developed city bus system in Bremerhaven that also reaches some neighboring communities.
- Regional trains, trams and city buses run within Bremen
shipping
- Weser shipping between Bremen and Bremerhaven with further approach points
- Helgoline between Hamburg, Cuxhaven and further after Heligoland
- Ferry connections to the Elbe and Weser as well as to the island Neuwerk
- Coastal shipping (also with pleasure boats) is made difficult by the tides; many mooring options can only be approached or abandoned during high tide; often marinas fall completely dry.
By bicycle
There are good cycle routes with good signage within the region. In connection with the train, every place within the region can be reached on a day trip (with return on the same day). Some of the paths are also approved for cars (secret paths); In individual cases, cycle routes also lead over classified roads without a separate cycle path.

- 1 Osten-Hemmoor transporter bridge. Tel.: 49 (0)172 661 84 67, Email: [email protected]. Osten has the oldest transporter ferry in Germany, which has been a connection across the Oste River since 1909. Their construction, with a clearance height of 30 m above sea level, enables even larger sailing ships to pass through. At the time of its construction, the Oste was still an important trade route with heavy shipping traffic. Today it is only used for tourist purposes. The 21 m high, green-painted construction, which is protected as a technical monument, towers over the small town East Visible from afar, while the ferry itself is trundling close to the surface of the water. Pedestrians, cyclists and vintage cars are allowed to use the ferry.Open: April Oct .: 12: 00-16: 00; May Sept .: 11: 00-17: 00 every hour on the hour. June-Aug. 10: 00-18: 00 every half hour. activities
- Cycling - There are many cycling routes in the green, flat landscape. The "flat mountains" (head wind) may have to be mastered. See cycling maps literature
- Water hiking on the 55 km long Elbe-Weser shipping route from Bremerhaven above Bad Bederkesa to Otterndorf to the Elbe. Today, the route is particularly popular with motor yachts in the leisure sector. A trip in a canoe, kayak and folding boat is of course also possible (however, depending on your personal point of view, it may be a bit monotonous due to the canal that often runs straight through the landscape). In principle, professional cargo shipping no longer uses the canal route due to its too small profile. For more initial information on the channel, see the Wikipedia article Elbe-Weser shipping route.
- The Medem von Ihlienwort in Otterndorf and the Schwinge from the village of Schwinge in Stade are suitable for shorter paddleboarding routes.
kitchen
- In the cities and municipalities there is the usual selection of German and international cuisine in Germany
- There are disproportionately many restaurants and snack bars with fish and shrimp offers. They're also cheaper than inland.
nightlife
- There are cinemas in Cuxhaven, Stade, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Hamburg and possibly in other cities.
- There are theater / musicals in Bremerhaven, Bremen, Hamburg, Stade and Cuxhaven
security
climate
- On the North Sea coast, temperature peaks are softened in both directions by the prevailing westerly wind; Temperatures above 25 ° C or severe frost are therefore rare. This effect is much less pronounced in places further away from the coast, such as Nordholz, than in Cuxhaven. So if it is too cold for you, you could withdraw a little more inland. Unless there is an easterly wind, then the inland is many degrees colder.
- Wind is often "channeled" on the main dike, so it is felt more strongly there, but it is still very strong due to the lack of forest areas than inland. The possibility of transporting bikes on the train means that headwinds can be avoided when planning a route. Popular routes are Cuxhaven-Stade on the Elbe, Buxtehude-Bremervörde-Bremerhaven.
