Tourist Attractions

St. Petri
  • The Ostener 1 Local history and digging museum shows a collection of around 4,500 containers of alcoholic beverages that the spirits manufacturer Jan ten Doornkaat has put together over 35 years.
  • In the 2 De FährStuv you not only get tickets and souvenirs for the transporter bridge, but also extensive information about this technical monument. You can also find out more about the town of Osten and immerse yourself in the history of the Oste and the transporter bridge, presented on visually appealing display boards and banners. The last eight suspension ferries in the world are also briefly presented.
  • The baroque church 3 St. Petri was built from bricks in 1746/1747 by the Hamburg builder Johann Leonhard Prey. Prey was the co-builder of the Hamburg main church St. Michaelis, the Hamburg Michel. From the dimensions of the church you can still see the prosperity of the Easterners at that time. The interior furnishings from the time of construction have been preserved unchanged; it is unmistakably similar to that of the Hamburger Michel. The baroque pulpit altar with its more than 10 m high rear wall, the two-storey west gallery, the long row of the Gutspriechen, the flat wooden barrel vault with the lavish ornamental decoration above the large nave can impress with the uniformity of the late baroque style. The organ was created by Jakob Albrecht in 1751. In 1890 the Peternell brothers installed a new organ in the old prospectus. The organ was restored in 1992.

Osten-Hemmoor transporter bridge in the Wikipedia encyclopediaOsten-Hemmoor transporter bridge in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsOsten-Hemmoor transporter bridge (Q429344) in the Wikidata databaseOsten-Hemmoor transporter on Facebook.Osten has the oldest transporter ferry in Germany, which has been a connection across the Oste River since 1909. Their construction, with a clearance height of 21 m above sea level, enables even larger sailing ships to pass through. At the time of its construction, the Oste was still an important trade route with heavy shipping traffic. Today it is only used for tourist purposes. The 30 m high, green-painted construction, which is protected as a technical monument, towers over the small town East Visible from afar, while the ferry itself is trundling close to the surface of the water. Pedestrians, cyclists and vintage cars are allowed to use the ferry.Open: April Oct .: 12: 00-16: 00; May Sept .: 11: 00-17: 00 every hour on the hour. June-Aug. 10: 00-18: 00 every half hour. From November to March crossings only on request.Price: adults € 2.00, children. 1.50 €. Bicycle € 0.50.

The ferry had a load capacity of 18 t and could transfer up to 6 cars or 100 people to the other side of the river in about 3 minutes.

The transporter bridge is now a technical monument. However, it is only in operation for tourist purposes, since the 495 federal road has made it easier to cross the Oste since 1974. Since only eight ferries of this type are known worldwide, one of them in Rendsburg, others in Spain and other countries, the importance of the Ostener ferry as a cultural monument was recognized, and the Spanish King Juan Carlos I took over the patronage of the newly founded in 2003 World Federation of Suspension Ferries.

The German ferry route, a tourist route that opened in the summer of 2004 and is run by Bremervörde to Kiel leads, connects the Ostener monument with the second German transporter bridge above the Kiel Canal between Rendsburg and the community Osterrönfeld, with the East since 2005 a municipal "partnership under the sign of the transporter bridge".
The transporter bridge has been completely restored since 2006 and is once again transporting interested people.
