Balje is a municipality on the Niederelbe in the district of Stade, in Elbe-Weser triangle.

Wild bird reserve Nordkehdingen on the Elbe

Balje is a rural community on the southern bank of the Elbe near Stade. The eponymous place belongs to the municipality 1 Balje, the localities 2 Listen, 3 South dike west and 4 South dike east and other small settlements, mostly as small street villages along the dikes. Balje is strongly influenced by water and the construction of dykes due to the Oste, which partially limits the community to the south, the estuary and the Osteteich created by the Eastern Barrier in the west and the Elbe in the north.

In addition to the eastern barrier, the Lower Elbe Natureum on the artificial Osteinsel, the medieval museum village in Hörne and several nature reserves in the moor and marshland on the Elbe are particular tourist attractions of the community.

The nearest rail connection is in Cadenberg, from here there are connections with the call collective taxi AST as well as from Stade.

By bus

Bus connections with the collective call taxi (AST) Stade (AST 2025 towards Itzwörden / Geversdorf) or from Cadenberg (AST 2825 in the direction of Freiburg (Elbe), register at least 45 minutes before departure by calling 01801-334433). Connections are shown in the online information of the railway.

In the street

The L 111 leads from Freiburg (Elbe) past Balje and closes in Neuhaus (Oste) to the B73 at. From Freiburg (Elbe) you can get to Wischhafen to the B495. There is one there Ferry connection across the Elbe Glückstadt.

By boat

Balje cannot be reached directly by ship. With the sport boat there is the possibility of up Neuhaus (Oste) to arrive. In the Neuhaus Sailing Association there are some guest berths. Also in Freiburg (Elbe) you can with pleasure boats in the harbor and at the Sailing Association Freiburg / Elbe moor.
