Other goals

background

The Lüneburg Heath forms a natural region within the North German Plain with its own geography and climate. It consists of extensive pine and birch forests, open heathland, beautiful farmland, market towns and picturesque villages. In the north it extends from the sluggish water of the Elbe, in the east from the pine-covered hills of the Drawehn, in the south from the flat depressions of the Aller and the Wümme, in the west from the flat depressions of the Wümme and in the northwest from the low mountain range that delimits the southern flank of Hamburg . Ideal for walking, cycling or just relaxing, it has become a popular travel destination, especially for the surrounding towns and cities.

Its highest point is the Wilseder Berg, a modest affair, only 169 meters high, but with a beautiful view in all directions. The hills of the Lüneburg Heath are moraines - ridges of sand and gravel that were left behind by the last ice age. Their natural forests of birch, pine and sessile oak were grazed or cut down by prehistoric farmers to leave open heathland on the barren sandy soils. The heaths are particularly attractive in autumn when they are covered in blooming purple heather humming with honeybees. Thanks to the use of fertilizer, a large part of the old heather has been reclaimed as arable land, and the remaining heather must be actively cultivated to prevent the forest from returning. The traditional bog sheep or Heidschnucke, whose robust character is well adapted to the conditions on the heather, continue to do their part to prevent the trees from returning.
