The small town Arendsee is located on the banks of the lake of the same name in the Altmark. It is mentioned as early as the 9th century. The Benedictine nunnery founded here in 1184 became a Protestant monastery in 1541 and abolished in 1812. The 5.4 square kilometer Arendsee of the same name was created by soil collapse. This is due to the groundwater that has leached the salt domes below the lake. This created cavities in the 260 million year old salt domes that collapsed. The last catastrophe occurred in 1685. At that time, the entire Mühlberg, including the mill, fell into the lake. As a result of this event, the lake grew by 20 hectares.

The most famous fish in the Arendsee was used in 1892 and originally came from Schleswig-Holstein. The Little whitefish belongs to the salmon fish. It grows to a maximum of 30 cm long and weighs 60 to 100 grams and is valued for its good taste and few bones. The meat is fatty but smoked a delicacy.
