Former border on the Elbe

Schnackenburg is the easternmost municipality in Lower Saxony and was cut off from the hinterland on two sides by the border during the German-German division. The municipality is the smallest municipality in Germany with city rights, Schnackenburg itself is one of the smallest cities in Germany.

Schnackenburg is located in the extreme northeastern corner of the Wendland at the confluence of the Aland into the Elbe, and was a border town and customs post in one during the division, plus a small protective port in the confluence of the Aland for inland navigation.
