The Elbe valley located in Germany in the federal states Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. She is part of the North German lowlands. This article describes the area of the Middle Elbe between the Hamburg seaport and the mouth of the Elster, not far from the Saxon state border.

The region "Middle Elbe" or "River Landscape Elbe" is still poorly developed in terms of tourism. This applies to the region as a whole and also to subregions. In particular, this makes it more difficult to perceive the landscape across borders. However, through the establishment of the biosphere reserve, the connection between the region becomes clear.

Biosphere reserve
- The Elbe river landscape biosphere reserve reaches the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and covers an area of about 37 km². Parts of it have been recognized as a bispare reserve since 1979. It is one of the most important contiguous riparian forest regions in Central Europe.

Numerous animal and plant species threatened with extinction have been identified in the floodplain forests, including black stork, white stork, red kite, beaver, water hazel, wild pear, orchid, leek. Rare cultivated plants can also be found in the region.
