background

In the petting enclosure, you get up close and personal with the animals.

The Serengeti Park Hodenhagen is an animal park with over 1500 animals on a spacious area with an adjoining amusement park. Due to its size, the animals from all continents live there in an almost natural habitat, which visitors drive through in their own car or by bus and can observe the animals in their almost natural herd behavior. The park is divided into four thematic areas: wildlife, water world, monkey world and leisure world.

Some of the wildlife can be explored on foot (monkey world, safari on foot). The entire animal world can be explored with your own car or in double-decker buses. The buses start every hour from the main entrance. Here the bus driver also takes the lead and tells interesting facts about the animals in the park. The buses also stop at the designated places, at the petting zoo and at the elephant enclosure. The route is about 10 km long and there are separate areas in which different animal species live together according to their natural habitats. It is allowed to get out in the petting zoo and it is also possible to feed the animals. A highlight is the giraffe feeding (also from your own car or on the bus). The tame animals may only be fed with fresh vegetables! In the predator areas and some other areas, however, signs are used to warn not to get out and to keep windows. Here the areas are divided by locks that are operated by the staff. In each section there are vehicles with keepers who watch and tame the animals (if necessary). The animals have "right of way" on the entire area.

getting there

motorist get from the A7 between Hanover and Hamburg via exit 49 (Westenholz) and the L 191 in the direction of Hodenhagen. About 4 km after the motorway, before Hodenhagen, turn left to the park. Total distance from A7 approx. 7 km.

With the train you get with the Erixx in just under 40 minutes from Hanover main station to Hodenhagen and then has a walk of about 3 km through the fields along the airfield, as there is no public bus connection to the park. The way is signposted, access is on the train tracks on the opposite side of the street from the train station. The last 500 m must be covered directly on the access road to Serengeti Park. Alternatively, of course, a taxi can be used - you may also hitchhike.

Cyclist on the Leine-Heide cycle path leave the cycle path at the level crossing at Hodenhagen train station and, like pedestrians, follow the approximately 3 km long, signposted dirt road to the Serengeti Park.

General information

Getting out not appropriate. Rhinos are by no means harmless.

Practical advice

At the entrance you have to decide whether you want to drive through the park with your own car or with the safari buses (double-decker buses), as you have to queue up with your car at the respective ticket booths. If you decide to take the bus, you can park your car in a separate parking lot. After buying your ticket, you have the opportunity to visit a toilet again, which you should use especially with children, as the journey can be long on days with a high number of visitors. In many cases, only stop-and-go is then possible, especially at the most interesting points that you would like to enjoy yourself in peace. However, there are several toilets during the passage through the wildlife.

Driving through the park in your own car is very exciting. The animals are tame and used to the traffic. No animal approaches or even touches a car without being attracted. The road traffic rules are simple: cars drive on the left, buses on the right. You can swerve to the right in your car to overtake. In many areas there is a warning against getting out and opening the windows. In the predator areas there are also jeeps of the park rangers, who intervene if necessary to shoo animals back. In an emergency, all you have to do is sound the horn, and the rangers will be with you in no time.

For those who do not want to drive through the Serengeti with their own car, the park has double-decker buses that leave the main station every hour. If it's not full, you'd better wait for the next bus to get a good seat on the bus. At the top, which most people think, is not recommended. Below you can experience a giraffe up close (feeding included). The driver also gives you a lot of information about the animals that live here. You can also ask questions.

In the leisure area, it is advisable to take food and drinks with you to the park in order not to be dependent on the gastronomic offers in the park. Restaurants, snack bars and ice cream stands are plentiful.

If you want to make extensive use of the offers of the water world (especially the aqua safari), you should have a change of clothes (or rainwear) with you on cooler days to be on the safe side.
