background
Ahlden (Aller) is lying in Aller-Leine valley between Verden in the northwest and Celle in the south East. The small town, the roots of which can be traced back to the year 1140, burned down completely in the Thirty Years' War, and later several devastating fires struck the place. Nevertheless, many historical buildings have been preserved, either because they survived the fires or because most of them were consequently rebuilt afterwards. The Ahldener Schloss and the Scheunenviertel are special sights of the place.
The Alte Leine, actually an old Aller arm, points to attempts to continue using an arm of the Aller, which had moved its bed north after a flood in 1618, by artificially diverting the Leine, which only succeeded for 20 years . Today the Alte Leine offers a natural bathing place.
