Soltau is a state-approved place with a brine spa in the middle of the Lüneburg Heath. Because of its location, the city becomes that too Heart of the heather called. Soltau offers numerous tourist attractions such as the Heide-Park, the Soltau-Therme, the play museum or the Designer Outlet Soltau and is therefore very popular with tourists and day-trippers and is known nationwide. Soltau is also an ideal starting point for numerous excursions in the area.

Soltau train station

Soltau is the junction of the Heidekreuz. This is where the Heidebahn meet from Hanover to Buchholz in the north heath and the American line of Bremen to Uelzen. Both lines are operated by the railway company Erixx which is also based in Soltau.

By bus

There are regular bus connections to Heide Park and the Designer Outlet Center Hamburg, Hanover, Luneburg and Celle. There is also a regular bus connection to Hamburg Airport.

The regular regional bus service of the Transport community Heidekreis connects the city of Soltau with the surrounding districts and neighboring cities. There are around 30 bus stops within the city center, some of which meet different lines. Centrally located and connected to several lines are mainly the 4 Bus stop Wilhelmstrasse, the 5 Bus stop Unter den Linden and the 6 Bus stop at the old city moat. The two train stations in Soltau (Han) and Soltau-Nord are served by the regular buses as well as the tourist attractions Heide Park and Designer Outlet Center. Other stops can be found near schools and hospitals or at the old people's home (see here for timetables).

In the street

Soltau is on the A7 E45 and can be reached via the Soltau-Süd and Soltau-Ost junctions. Further connections exist via the federal highways B3, B71 and B209 as well as via the state road L 163.

By boat

Although the Böhme is not navigable, it is a suitable area for Paddle tours. Since the Böhme flows into the Aller at the place of the same name, tours that range from several days to the Weser at.

By bicycle

The long-distance cycle paths cross in Soltau Leine-Heide cycle path (RFW4) and Heide-Radweg (RFW15). There is a well-developed network of cycle paths in the city, and cycle boxes are available at the train station. There were four from the ADFC Bed & Bike-Businesses recognized as particularly bicycle-friendly.

Although there are around 30 bus stops in Soltau (see above), the bus is very rarely used for trips within the city due to the irregular timetables. The best way to get around Soltau is by car or, due to the relatively short distances, by bike or on foot. Parking spaces are available at Am Alten Stadtgraben and in Böhmheide, among others. There are rental bicycles at the campsite On the simplest and at Bike rental Wettig.

Buildings in Soltau
Old Town Hall
  • The 1 Old City Hall was built in 1826 on Poststrasse and is today one of the landmarks of Soltau with its colored paintwork. While the city government moved to the neighboring New Town Hall, the registry office and the Freudenthal room are still located in the old building today.
  • 2 Holocaust Memorial The memorial, erected in 2007, consists of model steles from the Berlin Holocaust memorial and commemorates the almost 100 concentration camp prisoners who fled a train in 1945 and were then chased and killed by Soltau citizens.
  • 3 Forest mill The mill was first mentioned in a document as early as 936. Today the city library and the Soltau artist apartment are housed in the adjoining house.
  • 4 Council mill Evidently since 1384 the mill has been at the confluence of the Böhme and Soltau rivers. The adjacent building was built in 1890 and is now a listed building. In 1963 the mill was stopped, the building is empty today and is in need of renovation.

  • Spring market: Annual fair on Georges-Lemoine-Platz.
  • City festival: Always on the first weekend in June, Soltau presents itself at its city festival with a large open-air festival, flea market and children's festival.
  • Shooting festival: Every year on the first weekend in July, the Soltauer Schützengilde presents the historic rifle festival with carousel, dance and cotton candy on Schützenplatz. Of course, a proper hangover breakfast in one of the Rotts is also part of it.
  • Soltau summer: Every Thursday evening from the beginning of July to the end of August, free concerts for young and old take place in the Hagen from 6 p.m. This is where Soltau meets for beer and bratwurst.
  • Interlude - The tent: The summer guest performance of the Lauenburger puppet theater is used to offer an evening program in the tent in the Böhmepark.
