Altensteig is a city in the upper Nagoldtal.

Altensteig was first mentioned in a document in 1085. In 1398 the town, which had been converted into a protective castle, came to Baden, and in 1603 it came into the possession of the Württemberg people. Since the municipal reform around 1975, Altensteig has included the districts of Berneck, Altensteigdorf, Garrweiler, Hornberg, Spielberg, Überberg, Walddorf and Wart.

The city is surrounded by the municipalities Simmerfeld, Neuweiler, Neubulach, Wildberg, Ebhausen, Rohrdorf, Haiterbach and Egenhausen (all district of Calw) as well Pfalzgrafenweiler, Wörnersberg and Groenbach (Freudenstadt district).

The Stuttgart Airport is around 65 km away, for Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport it is around 80 km.

By train

Altensteig has no direct rail connection. The next train stations are in Nagold and in Freudenstadt. The former railway line of the narrow-gauge railway Altensteigerle is now a rail route for cyclists.

In the street

Altensteig is on the B28 between Freudenstadt and Nagold, the L362 connects Altensteig with Baiersbronn.
