Hornburg was a small town in its own right until November 2013 Lower Saxony and has since been part of the newly created community Schladen-Werla. Hornburg is between Bad Harzburg and Wolfenbüttel located.

background

Hornburg, located north of the Harz Mountains and not far from the inner German border during the division of Germany, has a completely preserved old town with over 400 half-timbered houses through which a tributary of the Harz river Ilse, the Mühlen-Ilse, meanders. The entire old town is under monument protection.

The city is also the birthplace of the German Pope Clement II (1005-1047), to whom both a church and a statue in the village are dedicated.

The old town of Hornburg was used as a backdrop in several older films, including the film adaptation of Fontanes Grete Minde (1976) and in When the evening bells ring with Willy Birgel (1951).
