The village was first mentioned in a document in 1075, and the first settlement was probably earlier. Bad Essen lies north of the Wiehengebirge. So the landscape is slightly wavy. In the street

  • The Dinosaur tracks in Barkhausen one finds east of Bad Essen. In the era of the Upper Jurassic, at least eleven dinosaurs walked over a temporarily flooded sandbank in what is now the Wiehen Mountains near Barkhausen, leaving their traces behind. In the now steep rock wall you can see imprints of herbivorous dinosaurs and a predatory dinosaur (Megalosaurus). There is not much going on in Bad Essen at night. A tip is the coffee grinder, where you can eat and drink something very comfortably.
