Melle

Melle, a city in Lower Saxony, is lying in Osnabrück Country in the city triangle Osnabrück, Bielefeld, Muenster on the Else between the Wiehengebirge in the north and the Teutoburg Forest in the south. Foothills of these two low mountain ranges lie in the Meller urban area. The city is part of the nature park "Nördlicher Teutoburger Wald - Wiehengebirge" im Osnabrück Country and is the third largest city in Lower Saxony.

As an area city, the city is divided into eight districts:

Melle was first mentioned in a document in 1169. Today's town of Melle emerged from the old district of Melle. On July 1, 1972, the old district with 56 communities was converted into a town and has been part of the Osnabrück district ever since.

Churches in Melle-Mitte

The towers of the two churches of St. Matthew and St. Petri shape the cityscape of Melle, visible from afar.

  • 1  St. Matthew. The originally Romanesque church, the oldest components of the church are the tower and north wall from the 13th century, was converted into a Gothic hall church after 1400. After the great fire in Melle in 1720, the roof was renewed and the tower was given a baroque top. In 1973 the church was extended by a tent-shaped extension to the old church. The south wall of the old church with its late Romanesque column portal, this was built into the Gothic south wall from the Romanesque north wall during the renovation work to the Gothic hall church, is now the north wall of the new church. Today the new and old church form a double church with two fully functional church rooms. The organ of the old church, the Clausing organ, built by Hinrich Clausing in 1713, is one of the oldest organs in northern Germany, together with the father organ of St. Petri. St. Matthew.

  • 9  Antoniuskirche - Hoyel. The Antonius Church in Hoyel dates from the Reformation period. It was rebuilt in 1829 with the exception of the tower.
  • 11  St. Anna - Sankt Annen. The church in Sankt Annen was built in 1505 as a pilgrimage church in honor of Saint Anne.

Gesmold Castle

There are some castles and mansions whose history dates back to the year 1200 in the city of Mell. Many of these castles and mansions are still privately owned and can only be viewed after consultation with the owners.

  • Half-timbered houses: In the city of Melle there are different versions of the so-called Lower Saxony House.
  • Old post office: One of the few preserved half-timbered houses in downtown Mell. Built in 1644. The old post office is used today for exhibitions, concerts, etc.

  • Kohlbrink: The Kohlbrink forms together with the market the central square in the center of the city center.   • 27  Bifurcation environmental education location. In the Gesmold district of Melle there is one of the rare river bifurcations where a river divides into two rivers. The rivers split in the Meller area Hare and Else. The Hase flows west to the Ems, the Else flows east to the Weser. Information boards give an overview of the origin and history of this bifurcation.
  • 28  Wedding avenue. On the footpath along the Else between the Kurpark and the Grönenbergpark, the Elsepromenade, is the Wedding avenue. Wedding couples, young parents and grandparents have planted a tree here for the wedding celebration or the birth of a child. A small sign reminds of the occasion. Over time, an avenue with a wide variety of tree species has emerged.

Mills played a major role in the development of the city. There are both wind and water mills in the urban area.

The town of Melle is well suited as a starting point for cycling tours. Within the urban area, around 365 km of well-developed and signposted cycle paths invite you to explore the sights of Grönegau.

There are around 500 km of well-marked hiking trails throughout the city. The main hiking areas are in the foothills of the Wiehengebirge z. Meller has six pools, five of which are open-air pools. Melle-Mitte has one Wave swimming pool. Other outdoor pools are in the districts of Neuenkirchen, Oldendorf, Riemsloh and Wellingholzhausen.
