Melle, a city in Lower Saxony, is lying in Osnabrück Country in the city triangle Osnabrück, Bielefeld, Muenster on the Else between the Wiehengebirge in the north and the Teutoburg Forest in the south. Foothills of these two low mountain ranges lie in the Meller urban area. The city is part of the nature park "Nördlicher Teutoburger Wald - Wiehengebirge" im Osnabrück Country and is the third largest city in Lower Saxony.

As an area city, the city is divided into eight districts:

Melle was first mentioned in a document in 1169. Today's town of Melle emerged from the old district of Melle. On July 1, 1972, the old district with 56 communities was converted into a town and has been part of the Osnabrück district ever since.

Churches in Melle-Mitte

The towers of the two churches of St. Matthew and St. Petri shape the cityscape of Melle, visible from afar.

  • 1  St. Matthew. The originally Romanesque church, the oldest components of the church are the tower and north wall from the 13th century, was converted into a Gothic hall church after 1400. After the great fire in Melle in 1720, the roof was renewed and the tower was given a baroque top. In 1973 the church was extended by a tent-shaped extension to the old church. The south wall of the old church with its late Romanesque column portal, this was built into the Gothic south wall from the Romanesque north wall during the renovation work to the Gothic hall church, is now the north wall of the new church. Today the new and old church form a double church with two fully functional church rooms. Gesmold Castle
