Herford was first mentioned in a document around the year 800. City rights were granted to the place around 1170, in 1342 Herford became Hanseatic city. In 1647/1652 the city lost its independence after the occupation by the Brandenburg Elector. Herford developed into an independent district town under Prussian administration. In 1847 the Cologne-Minden Railway and the Herford train station were built. With the onset of industrialization, the city grew beyond the area of ​​the earlier city fortifications.
