Hamm is a big city in North Rhine-Westphalia.
background
Hamm is on the river lip, on the northeastern edge of the Ruhr area and transition to the Hellwegbörden and Münsterland.
Hamm is a planned town founded in 1226 by the then Count von der Mark. In the following centuries Hamm served as the main town, sometimes also as residence, and seat of the appellate court of the county of Mark. From 1417 Hamm was a Hanseatic city. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Hamm belonged to Prussia and became the seat of the Higher Regional Court for Westphalia.
From the middle of the 19th century, Hamm became a railway junction on the line between Berlin and the Ruhr area and developed into an industrial city. Between 1861 and 1914 the number of inhabitants quadrupled, with workers from the Westphalian wire works mainly settling in the districts of West and South Fieldmark. Hamm was badly damaged in the Second World War.
Due to the incorporation of the municipal area reform of 1975, the number of inhabitants doubled again and Hamm became a major city. From the 1970s, the coal mines were gradually closed. The thorium high-temperature reactor in Hamm-Uentrop, which was planned from 1971 onwards, was due to. its high costs, long construction time, susceptibility to failure and its unsatisfactory, short operation as one of the greatest technical debacles in Germany: two years after it went online, it was shut down again. The population has stagnated or even decreased slightly since the 1990s. The proportion of foreigners is 13.6 percent, 29% have a migration background.
Hamm is an important judicial location to this day; the Higher Regional Court responsible for the north and east of North Rhine-Westphalia (the largest in the Federal Republic of Germany) and the associated public prosecutor's office are located here.
