The old Hanseatic city of Soest (historically: Sosat, Latinized Susatum) has a history of almost 1200 years, the first written mention of it comes from 836. Soest is at least 400 years older than almost all central European cities. The city was on Hellweg, an important medieval trade route that crossed Westphalia from west to east. The so-called Soest city law was the first verifiably recorded city law in Germany (it was noted on cowhides) and was a model for over 70 cities, especially in northern Germany.

In the Middle Ages Soest was one of the wealthiest trading cities in Central Europe and one of the principal cities of the Hanseatic League. The self-confident Soest bourgeoisie even tried to gain independence from the Archdiocese of Cologne. This sparked a five-year feud in the middle of the 15th century, during which the city was placed under an imperial ban. As a result, Soest became part of the Herzugtum Kleve-Mark and received extensive privileges. However, the city was now directly on the border and was cut off from its hinterland, which still belonged to the territory of the archbishops. As a result, Soest lost much of its former importance and prosperity in the following decades and centuries, the merchants' houses fell into disrepair and a large part of the citizens had to live on agriculture.

Under Prussian rule Soest was made a district town and received an important train station, but different from the cities of the nearby Ruhr area no significant industry or population growth developed. The advantage of this (inadequate) development, however, is that the medieval townscape has largely been preserved and has not been replaced by more modern buildings.

Despite considerable damage in the Second World War, the historic city center was largely preserved. Over 600 buildings are listed in the center of Soest.

Among the most famous personalities in Soest's history are the artists Conrad von Soest (1370–1422; a painter of the soft late Gothic style), Heinrich Aldegrever (1502 – approx. 1555; a copper engraver, painter and seal cutter of the Renaissance).

Streets and squares

  • On the edge of Petrikirchplatz Towards the town hall there is a view of the city center cast in bronze, which was cast for blind citizens. It shows a three-dimensional view of the city and is provided with braille.
  • The small alleys between the half-timbered houses with the round walls typical of Soest.
  • If you walk through the alleys and narrow streets, you will notice the half-timbered houses with their protruding gables. This construction method was used so that the upper floors, where there was usually a store, could be better equipped with a pulley.

Parks

Similar to the Pader springs in Paderborn, there are also rivers gushing out of the ground in Soest. These arise among other things in the Big pond and under today's parking lot nearby. The two streams later flow together into the Lippe.

Criminal offenders used to be bobbed into the pond. Today three people are symbolically teetered into the pond every year who have not taken sufficient care of the city's well-being. For example, the head of the Stadtwerke, whose company lost power during the All Saints' Fair. Sometimes people were still hanging out in the attractions.
