The Pengel-Anton cycle path is a Railway cycle path by the Sauerland and leads from Brilon through the Möhnetal to the Möhnesee and ultimately after Soest. The calm landscape is a varied mixture of fields, forests and floodplains.

  • Signposting: Standard-compliant arrow signs, but no Pengel Anton. Between Brilon and Möhnesee as the "Möhnetal cycle path". Then as "R43".

The Möhnetalbahn was largely shut down by 1970. The train still runs on the Belecke - Rüthen section, which is why good, but somewhat hilly farm roads are used here. On site, Pengeln means something like Bimmeln and Pengel-Anton was the tourist train.

The cycle path was built from 1985. Where the cycle path accompanies the federal road, the railway line was only partially used. You can see the rusting rails that haven't been removed.

Brilon has no direct connection to the German motorway network. The closest junctions are at Bestwig on the A 46, at Geseke on the A 44 (towards Dortmund), at Marsberg on the A 44 (towards Kassel) and at Bad Wünnenberg on the A 33.

The Moehne - more of a stream than a river

The Möhne rises near Brilon, although the exact source is somewhat controversial. As a dog basin, it first flushes the sewer system before it becomes the official Möhne after merging with the Aa.

  • Brilon (435 m above sea level) - it starts at the station "Stadt". Unfortunately, if you follow the cycle path, you can't see anything of the city. The B 7 is crossed and the city is left to the north. Unfortunately, you now cycle about 10 km next to the B 480 and the B 516 (of which maybe 3 km on the route of the main road). To the left the Möhne flows like a lively stream.
  • Heidberg - Shortly after the village, the railway line and the main road are left to the left and a good forest path follows.
  • Ruethen - the place is only touched
  • Licking - is crossed on local roads, including the town center. At the end of the village, a bit next to the railway line, which is then taken over by the cyclists. Now the railway line is used to a large extent.

  • Visually - the former train station has been very well restored and is now used as a garden restaurant directly on the route.
In the area of ​​the station there are two old, renovated passenger wagons. On Sunday you can visit an exhibition on the railway line [1]

  • Wamel am Möhnesee (222 m above sea level) - the lido "Uferlos" invites you to swim. If you want, you can follow the Möhnetal cycle path Neheim Follow along the Ruhr or cycle around the lake. The following route goes uphill on the Haarstrang (282 m above sea level), whereby the slope is extended to approx. 10 km in length. The destination of the route is lower again.
  • Soest (99 m above sea level) - the historic city is worth a visit. The bike path ends at the city park.
