Ruethen is a small town in Sauerland. It is located in the northeast of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park on the ridge Strand of hairwho that Sauerland from Münsterland and the Soest Börde separates.

Rüthen was founded by the Archbishops of Cologne, the place received city rights in 1200. Between the 14th and 17th centuries Rüthen belonged to the Westphalian Hanseatic League. The city was surrounded by a massive sandstone wall with 11 towers and four city gates.
