Möhnesee is a community in Sauerland, in the southern part of the Soest district and on the northern edge of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. She's after the Möhne reservoir named around which their districts are scattered all around. The lake is also the main tourist attraction. In 2013 the dam was 100 years old (inauguration was on July 12, 1913), which was celebrated with numerous celebrations in the community.

Map of Möhnesee

background

The community Möhnesee was only created in 1969 from the districts Baskets (was previously in office), as well as Berlingsen, Roars, Büecke, Delecke, Echtrop, Ellingsen, Günne, Hewingsen, Neuhaus, Stockum, Theiningsen, Völlinghausen, Wamel, Westrich and Wippringsen. Some of these are small villages with only a few houses (e.g. Büecke only has 120 inhabitants). In addition, there are still many farmers, as the area (Soester Börde) is very fertile and is used intensively for agriculture. Almost all districts have existed for more than a thousand years. Before the community reform, they were grouped together in the office of Körbecke and have therefore long felt connected to one another.

To the north of the community, the strand of hair stretches from east to west. The sandy mountain range (= translation of the term "hair") is about 80 meters higher than the Möhne valley and represents the transition to the Hellwegbörden . In the south begins the Arnsberg Forest, which belongs to the nature reserve of the same name, which extends to the south Ruhr valley moves. At 411 meters, the Phankopf in the Arnsberg Forest is the highest point in the municipality.

Things really got going with the small town only with the construction of the Möhne dam between 1908 and 1912. The residents along the Möhne had to move, many new residents were added, the districts are now mostly on the lakeshore and have a riverside road and several bridges between themselves connected.

The Wamel train station, which had only recently been built, also had to move, a few meters higher up the slope - if the lake had been dammed, the tracks would have come under water about two meters. The old route can still be seen today on the Hermann-Kätelhön-Straße. For the then new route, a deep cut had to be made in the slope of the Westenberg between Wamel and Völlinghausen, and a high dam had to be built in the valley of the Wamel brook around the railway in an arc around the Berghof and over the heights of Stockum 65 meters to route higher to Echtrop.

Körbecke has by far the most residents and service facilities, followed by Völlinghausen, Delecke and Günne. The start of the dam is between Wamel and Völlinghausen in the east, the Kanzelbrücke is a striking sign of this. The barrier wall is in the west, in the district of Günne. In the south, shortly after Neuhaus, the Heve first flows into a fore basin (this is the Hevesee) and then into the dam, this side arm (Hevearm) is under special conservation.

The best-known story of the Möhne Reservoir is the bombing of the dam in May 1943, which triggered a large tidal wave through the Möhne Valley to the Ruhr Valley, killing well over 1,000 people. Target of attack (Operation Chastise) of the Allies was to weaken the German armaments industry in the Ruhr area. There are information boards and exhibits on the dam wall and inside, and a memorial at the former Himmelspforten monastery.

Nowadays the community is well positioned with a mixture of agriculture, small businesses and industrial companies, spa houses and a wide range of tourism offers.

getting there

By plane

The two nearest regional airports are in Paderborn / Lippstadt and Dortmund. The nearest international airports are Dusseldorf and Münster / Osnabrück

1  Landscape Information Center Water and Forest Möhnesee e.V. (LIZ), 59519 Möhnesee-Günne, Brüningserstraße 2 (at the lower end of the equalization basin). Tel.: 49 (0)2924 84110, Fax: 49 (0)2924 859562, Email: . The center is located in an old mill and clearly shows the nature of the Möhnese region. Both the water (lake and its tributaries) and the forest (meaning the Arnsberg Forest) are presented in a well-prepared manner. Offers a first overview, but has more children as a target group.Open: Mon closed, Tue-Fri 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat, Sun and public holidays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.Price: adults € 3.50, children € 2.50, family € 9.

The Körbeck Church of Sankt Pankratius has excellent wood carving skills by the master Heinrich Stütting from the early years of the 19th century. Among other things, the sermon chair is carried on the shoulder by a huge Christophorus figure, which the locals jokingly call "Sankt Stangelinus". Stuetting, who was very fond of the bottle, often had arguments with the pastor in the long years of his work in Körbecke because of his drunkenness. At some point Stütting resisted and referred to the pastor's own addiction, chewing tobacco. A plaque on the stairs to the sermon chair reminds of this - the griffin is embraced by a feathered neck of a swan, which pinches the griffin's nose with its beak. Whenever the pastor walks from the altar to the sermon, he has this plaque in the middle of his field of vision - the warning to touch your own nose before scourging the behavior of others.

Körbecke has a beautiful public park on the lake shore. The bridge that existed when the dam in Körbecke was built was destroyed in the war. A few meters further on, a new, slender bridge was built in the 1960s, but it does not allow car traffic, only for pedestrians and cyclists. Körbecke has a youth hostel on the southern edge of the lake, east of the foot of the bridge.

Barrier wall and pond
Barrier wall with the two slider towers

The Möhne reservoir or, to put it more briefly, the Möhnesee has a surface area of over 10 square kilometers and a bank length of 40 kilometers, with full damming it is 36 m deep at the deepest point and filled with 134.5 million cubic meters of water. Who more Technical specifications want to know and want to see the dam sketched in different views, let him be brochure recommended by the Ruhr Association.

The dam offers:

The Barrier wall is an impressive sight. The crown length is 650 meters with a width of 6.25 m on the top of the wall, it is made of quarry stone and with its two slider towers looks a bit like a long castle or fortification wall. On the air side, it is up to 40 meters high, including the equalization pool Pond called. You can park on Möhnestrasse, which is chargeable on weekends. There is a public toilet, a small kiosk (Möhnesee pavilion) and the ticket booth of the MS Möhnesee with the landing stage not far away.

  • Stop, get out and take at least the short walk over the top of the wall, there and back with breaks for 30 minutes.
  • If you have more time and inclination, you can make a round of it: on both sides to the right and left of the dam wall, serpentine paths lead down to the level of the pond, followed by a circular path around the pond. Total distance 3 km, approx. 1 hour. The dam only looks really huge from below.
  • TIP: Park at the LIZ at the lower end of the pond, look at the exhibition there (admission ticket allows free parking) and from there start the tour of the dam wall.
Pulpit Bridge
Pulpit bridge from the hiking trail not far from the parking lot

On the other side of the lake, at its beginning, is the Pulpit Bridge. The arched bridge made of sandstone and greywacke has five arches with a span of 7 meters and six "pulpits" (bulges on each arched column that are reminiscent of church pulpits). It marks the point where the Möhne flows into the Möhnesee and is located between Wamel and Völlinghausen on the K 8 (for the navigation system: Bahnhofstrasse, corner of Kanzelbrücke). If you drive over the bridge there is a small parking lot on the south side. Getting out is worthwhile, from the bridge you have a beautiful view to the east of the Möhneauen (a nature reserve since 1985) and to the west of the beginning of the reservoir. The parking lot itself is nicely done with the picnic area only built in 2012.

  • This is where the Nature trail through the Möhneauewhich conveys the ecological and cultural-historical characteristics on 12 stations. 2.4 km, license plate "A 1", easy hike from the parking lot to Völlinghausen, also passes the small wildlife park.
other hiking trails and bike tours come along here, z. B. the Bike tours Kanzelbrücke (16 km) or Big Möhnesee tour (36 km) as well as the circular route over the Stockumerdamm or the Kiepenkerlweg.
TIP: Come here early in the morning when the fog is over the lake and stream meadows, great photo opportunity and wonderful atmosphere.

The Animal and nature protection is capitalized at the Möhnesee, which means on the one hand restrictions for people (swimming, diving, sailing, fishing, ... partly not allowed) but on the other hand it also enables wonderful animal and nature observations, especially in winter.

  • The whole lake is European Bird sanctuary (Natura 2000) and a continentally important resting, passage and wintering place. The overwinterers regularly amount to over 10,000 birds, the migrations from the Nordic to the Mediterranean and African places can amount to up to 20,000 animals.
  • The Hevearm is also still as Nature reserve expelled and its forecourt, the Hevesee, is particularly protected as a European natural heritage. The undisturbed water areas are important fishing grounds for the birds.
  • The Heve itself is a very natural stream, which, like the Möhneauen, is under nature protection. Here and at the other tributaries of the reservoir there are also many breeding opportunities. At the lake itself, breeding is difficult for the waterfowl due to the fluctuating water level.

The sidewalks around the Hevearm offer good observation opportunities. Please do not leave the paths in the direction of the lake, it will disturb the waterfowl. Bring a telescope with you. You can also hike along the Heve from Neuhaus [1] and some clubs also offer guided hikes with explanations.

TIP: the passenger ships also take a lap into the Hevearm and since the birds are used to it, they don't let that bother them. only unfortunately the ships do not stop.
Which birds can you see now?
  • The most important resting birds are (percentages 2001 to 2006): tufted duck 31%, mallard 24%, coot 22%, great crested grebe 9% and pochard 5%. The "rest" is also interesting but not so often to be found: Kingfisher (more at the tributaries), red kite and woodpecker (more in the southern forest areas), whooper and mute swans, black stork. There are also geese: greylag goose, Canada goose, and Egyptian goose.
  • Breeders at the lake are ducks, pond and coot, mute swan and great crested grebe, at the tributaries kingfisher, gray wagtail and dipper.

The allowed Bathing areas there is - loud city - three:

  • Lido "Uferlos" in Wamel, with 1700 tons of extra poured white sand and 3000 m² of lawn for playing and lying down. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. during the season, Mon-Thu. close it at 10:00 p.m., on the weekend the end is open. Swimming is supervised by a DLRG rescue station until 7:00 p.m. Admission is € 3 for adults and € 12 for children. 1.50 €. Most of the time is going on in the evening.
  • Bathing area in Delecke at the campsite (also has motorhome parking spaces 8 € / day per parking ticket, no electricity, no disposal options), Linkstrasse 20, unguarded and free of charge, no restaurants, showers and toilets are available
  • Bathing area in baskets, at the leisure facility Körbecke, Börnigeweg, also unguarded and free of charge, small beach café, sunbathing area, toilet
Passenger shipping
Ticket booth near the barrier wall

The Passenger shipping is with the MS Möhnesee (Catamaran with space for 600 people and on-board restaurant). During the season (Easter to the end of October) it runs every hour (11 a.m. - 4 p.m.) from the barrier wall in one lap on the eastern part of the reservoir (landing stages: barrier wall - (loop on the Hevearm) - Hevetal - (docking maneuver ) - Delecke - Barrage).

It is unique Docking maneuvers the MS Körbecke (80 people, only on weekends, public holidays and NRW summer holidays on trips from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.), which drives the rear decks into the MS Möhnesee and enables transfers for around 5 minutes. The small shuttle then drives under the Delecker Bridge to Körbecke and the large MS Möhnesee continues to Delecke (approximately at the end of this bridge). However, this only works if the dam is not so well filled, it has to be less than 93% inside, you can look it up on the Ruhrverband's website (see "System image" below).

A 1 hour round trip on the big ship cost 7 € / adult in 2012. and € 3.50 / child, with shuttle to Körbecke € 9 / € 4.50 and the large 2h round tour including two docking then € 11 / € 5.50. Sections for hikers and cyclists are also possible.

In addition, over 30 parties, BBQs, Mother's Day brunch or pirate boat trips and other events (especially in the evening) are offered.

The Ruhr Association also offers:

  • Inspection of the dam by appointment, see (information sheet). This is particularly interesting for groups.
  • Visiting the stocking fish farm in April or May, possible for groups by arrangement. Here pike, lake trout and whitefish are raised and later released in the lake. Information about the fishing master of the Ruhrverband, phone: 02924/7184. More about fishing at → Activities.
  • Information about the lake: Leisure map Möhnesee, Webcam (Master data and water level can also be called up there) and Möhnetalsperre site plan (System picture).

Forest

South of Möhnesee begins the actual Arnsberg Forest, together with the Warsteiner Hügelland, the Plackwald, the Obermöhne and Almewald it forms the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Möhnesee is the northernmost municipality in the nature park, which is an important station there → LIZ. It offers a lot of information about the forest areas and can be visited as the first information point.

Forestry was and is still practiced in the nature park, i.e. trees are felled and the wood is used economically. Neuhaus, the part of Stockum that lies south of the reservoir, was originally a logging village. Also the Lumberjack Round, a hiking trail through Neuhaus, still shows this legacy.

Through the forest and the extensive, but also well-developed nature, the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park for hiking. The cities and tourism associations have also recognized this and are therefore expanding hiking trails, maintaining them and setting up one or the other highlight.

  • A well-known way is that Hanse Way (X15 from SGV), it runs in north-south direction from Soest via Körbecke, Neuhaus, Breitenbruch (formerly an Arnsberg lumberjack village) to Arnsberg and on via Eslohe, Winterberg to Herzhausen.
  • The runs in an east-west direction Run away (X26 of the SGV), from Neheim over the heights near the gatehouse to Warstein and on via Rüthen, Wewelsburg, Hamborn Castle to Paderborn.
  • Plackweg, X1 of the SGV
  • Forest route (which also includes the sound forest)
  • Westphalia hiking trail, leads from Hattingen via Witten, Herdecke, Dortmund, Unna, Wickede, Ense also via Körbecke, Allagen, Belecke to Warstein and finally to Altenbeken.

The first house on the square is largely the Delecke house, located on the north shore of the lake west of the Delecker Bridge. This hotel-restaurant of the Kettler group of companies from Ense as well as the former Hotel Recklingloh (called a senior citizens' home) in Wameler were preferred weekend refuges for the wealthy citizens of the Ruhr area, the directors of the collieries and steelworks. The Hotel Haus Delecke has a wonderful secluded location on a promontory near the dam, a large terrace, very good, still comparatively inexpensive cuisine and excellently trained, friendly staff. Upscale ambience.

In Günne there is the "sawmill", a restaurant on the eastern edge of the village facing the barrier wall, and another restaurant in the center of the village, as well as the home of the Elli-Heuss-Knapp Foundation on the southern base of the barrier wall high up in the Arnsberg Forest, along with a simple one Self-service restaurant.

At the northern end of the wall is the Sabe Mente restaurant, in the beautifully situated house of the former construction management on the barrier wall. Opposite on the street, a few meters below the dam wall, a cafe-restaurant and a snack bar "Zum Wolf", the parking lot also a motorcyclist meeting place. Parking at the dam is usually chargeable, unless you are a guest in one of the restaurants.

Near the foot of the bridge in Deleck, several cafe restaurants and the rustic US gastronomy of the "Geronimo" vie for customer favor. The Geronimo is - with its wooden construction and the viewing terrace over the lake as well as its own park road - also a destination for motorcycle groups and vintage car drivers.

On the south side of the lake, high on the ridge of the Rennweg in the Arnsberg Forest in the "Haken" of the lake between Möhne and Hevebecken, is the "Torhaus" on the B229 Terrace and dining in a patio. There is a large sculpture park; the art exhibited there is always partially changed and can largely be purchased. The "Torhaus" was once the entrance to the Imperial Hunt, a gift from the Ruhrtalsperrenverein to Kaiser Wilheml II on the occasion of the construction of the dam.

In the vicinity of the Hevetal in the southern lake inlet, there have been repeated attempts to revive the Sankt Meinolf hunting lodge, the former hunting lodge of the Von Donner family from Hamburg, with gastronomy. Currently privately owned without gastronomy. Further up in the Hevetal near the small community of Neuhaus there is the weekend house residential park, formerly a campsite, with a simple restaurant "Fränkis Hütte".

In Körbecke there are two restaurant-cafes near the bridge, including Das Haus Griese, which has a good reputation for standard German cuisine. Three more restaurants are located in the higher town center. There is a cafe in the community center on the market.

On the south side of Körbecke there are two restaurants, "Il Camino", a restaurant with an Italian touch, and a small hotel-restaurant "Forsthaus" behind a bend and the lake cut. Immediately to the east of the youth hostel there is a snack bar at a small creek, another to the west of the foot of the bridge at the "Möhneturm"; as well as another snack bar at the mini golf course halfway to the Delecker Bridge.

In Stockum there is a snack bar at the northern foot of the dam, and a few meters to the east the "Zum Biber" inn, also a motorcycle club. Closed at the moment (as of August 2018).

In Wamel there is the "Uferlos" at the lido, a bathing oasis artificially created with thousands of tons of sand as a beach café. To the west of it the restaurants "Olive" and a simple snack bar, as well as a stand-up snack bar diagonally opposite on the site of the former Wamel train station. There is also an Italian restaurant at the beginning of Hermann-Kätelhön-Straße (access to the village of Wamel).

In Völlinghausen there is the restaurant "Sämer" in the Möhne valley south of the Möhne near the wildlife park, as well as the golf course on the heights above Völlinghausen towards Haarhöhe and Niederbergheimer Straße, which also has a restaurant-cafe attached.

On the hairline between Echtrop and Körbecke there is the "Schäferlinde" inn on the natural monument of the same name, a linden tree that is well over 250 years old and secured with an iron hoop.

nightlife

The nightlife of the Möhnesee takes place largely in Soest.

On Saturday evenings you can dine with live piano music in the Hotel Haus Delecke; a pianist provides entertainment at the Sautter grand piano in the hotel lobby in keeping with his status and status. The Griese house in Körbecke has a piano; the large Steinway grand piano formerly on the upper floor of the Geronimo has long since disappeared; Knowledgeable people could rock out on it with rock music, ragtime, blues and boogie woogie.
