background

The long-distance cycle path runs alongside the river through the Teutoburg Forest, Angry- and Münsterland, the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine. The Lippe districts lie along the route (Detmold and Horn-Bad Meinberg), Paderborn (Bad Lippspringe, Paderborn and Delbruck), Soest (Lippstadt, Lippetal, Welver), Warendorf (Wadersloh, Awls/ Dolberg), Unna (Werne, Bergkamen, Luenen, Selm), Coesfeld (Olfen), Recklinghausen (Haltern am See, Marl, Dorsten, Waltrop, Dates) and Wesel (Schermbeck, Hünxe, Wesel, Xanten) as well as the independent city Hamm.

The 11 theme loops refer to the traces of the Romans (then the path sign is provided with a red background) and to the theme of water (with a blue background). The themed loops can also be approached as pure day trips; a 6-day tour is ideal for the main route.

Except for the first 37 km, the route leads along the Lippe, the 220 km long tributary of the Rhine. But not only the river is a (water) issue, also the Lippe-Seiten-Kanal Datteln-Hamm (DHK) and Wesel-Datteln (WDK) as well as drinking water production (in Haltern am See) or health (healing places like Bad Lippspringe ) in addition to aspects. The Romans are not listed along the Lippe for nothing, they traveled on and next to the river from the Rhine to the east and tried to conquer Germania, which, as is well known, was stopped with the Varus Battle in 9 AD.

Special nature experiences can be experienced in the Lippeauen or on the three Lippe ferries (Wesel, Dorsten, Hamm).

The route succeeds the old, no longer maintained Roman route. Occasionally, signs of this can still appear. Otherwise everything should be dismantled. The opening was in spring 2012.

Route description with sights

Hermannsdenkmal - km 0

Former residential hut of Ernst von Bandel at the Hermannsdenkmal

The 1 Hermannsdenkmal is located on a former cattle rampart on the 386m high Teutberg and is the official starting point of the route. The statue is over 26m tall, with the base it is more than 53m total height - the sword alone is 7m long! It is still the tallest statue in Germany, and in its time it was also the tallest statue in the world. Hermann - as the German name for Arminius - is reminiscent of that Varus battle, of which it was believed at the time Teutoburg Forest took place and therefore called "Battle in the Teutoburg Forest". In the year 9 AD, three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus were defeated by the Germanic army under the Cheruscan prince Arminius. Today one suspects the slaughter place in different places in East Westphalia, North Germany and the Netherlands.

The plans for the colossal structure came from Ernst von Bandel, was built from 1838 to 1875. Bandel needed so long because the money ran out in the meantime. He lived for a few years near the memorial in the Bandel hut, which is still there today. You can find out more about him and the memorial in a small exhibition on site; there is also a cinema in the tourist information office.

The sandstone base can be climbed, the view from there of the valley with Detmold is very good. It is practically possible to get to the monument directly, from the parking lot it is still 500m (parking fees for cars € 2.50, motorcycles € 2.00, bicycles & buses free) From Schlossplatz in Detmold it is 7.5 km and 270 meters in altitude to the monument for cyclists, and from Apr-Oct Sa / Sun / Fe die Tourist bus route 792 up with a bike trailer. During the week there are city buses that go to Hiddesen, the ascent to the monument must then be hiked / experienced yourself.

Externsteine - km 20

Externsteine from the southwest

From Detmold to the Externsteinen it is 11.5km and 205 meters in altitude. The route leads along well-developed roads - but avoids the route along Paderborner Strasse and Externsteiner Strasse, which is heavily used by excursion traffic. Heiligenkirchen, Berlebeck and Holzhausen are small districts on the way. The Schliepsteinweg can help avoid a few meters in altitude between Holzhausen and the Externsteinen, but no information is available about the condition of the route.

The 2 Externsteine, a striking sandstone rock formation, are located on the southwestern outskirts of Horn-Bad Meinberg near the Holzhausen-Externsteine district. The "National Geotope" consists of 13 free-standing individual rocks on the edge of the dammed Wiembecke and rises up to 47.7 m above the surface of the Wiembecke pond. The rocks are part of the middle mountain range of the [[Teutoburg Forest | Teutoburg Forest] on the border to Egge Mountains, only that here the stone layers were unfolded vertically. Some can be climbed (stairs carved into the rock, bridge from the tower and stair rock, viewing platform, etc.), numerous human traces can be admired (deposition of the cross, grotto, Lippe coat of arms, etc.), an information center offers interesting insights into geology and History. The information center and the path to the rocks are wheelchair accessible, but the rocks can only be climbed via 124 steep steps. Two nature trails can also be used with wheelchairs, but a lot of help is required due to the inclines.

Since 1926 the 127 hectare area is under natural reserve, since 2006 it has been designated as a European habitat, several Nature trails (Schliepstein route 1.4 km, Bärenstein and Knickenhagen route each 2.5 km) open up the area with mountain heather, sloping moors, wet meadows and old trees.

The high-altitude hiking trail "Hermannsweg" and the "Eggeweg", part of the European long-distance footpath E1, lead past the Externsteine.

Bad Lippspringe - km 37

Arminius spring

The 16.6km from the Externsteinen to Bad Lippspringe have a good 100 meters of altitude, most of them when crossing the low mountain range Teutoburg Forest, where the cycle path is parallel but at a distance from the B 1. From Schlüsselgrund it is almost always downhill, only at the Kohlstädt castle ruins there is another 15m ascent. The stream that runs alongside is the Strothe, which will later flow into the Lippesee. Through Schlangen (a municipality in the Lippe district) and Lippspringe it goes on district roads to the city center.

2 Bad Lippspringe lies on the western side of the Teutos, it is allowed to call itself both a medicinal bath and a climatic health resort. The Lippe rises here near a castle ruin and also its first tributary, the Jordan. There are also the four mineral springs: Martinus, Liborius, Alte and Neue Arminiusquelle. The focus of the city is also the health industry, there are a total of seven clinics with different focuses, a 200 hectare spa forest and four parks (Arminius and Jordan Park after the sources, the Kaiser-Karls-Park with water fountains and beautiful flower beds as well as the Park am Auguste-Victoria-Stift), two thermal baths (Westfalen- and Arminius-Therme, also an outdoor thermal bath) and surprisingly many good accommodation possibilities for such a small town. The drinking halls and water treading basins are accessible to everyone, and a salt grotto can be visited for a fee. You should ask your doctor about the health aspects beforehand.
