Waltrop is a city in a circle Recklinghausen on the northern edge of the Ruhr area.
background
Waltrop shows itself as a central place with a closed settlement pattern around the historic city center with the Catholic parish church St. Peter and six peasant communities around it (Leveringhausen, Elmenhorst, Brockenscheidt, Döttelbeck (today Oberwiese), Holthausen, Behem (today Lippe)) This is rather untypical for the area between the Ruhrpott and Münsterland. Waltrop has grown historically as a parish in Vest Recklinghausen (which belongs to the Archbishops of Cologne) as a border area to the duchy of Münster, the county of Mark and the imperial city of Dortmund. The settlement has repeatedly suffered from corresponding feuds.
The name "Waltrop" or "Waldorp" first appeared in 1147 with Pope Eugene III. when a donation to the abbey in Cologne-Deutz is mentioned. In the 15th year the place was mentioned as "freedom", in 1596 it was given the right to hold a year and cattle market twice a year.
