The Romans already had a camp on the Lippe in the Beckinghausen district, Lünen was first mentioned in a document in 890, and in 1341 it was given city rights. With the industrialization of the Ruhr area, the iron and steel industry (1826 the Eisenhütte Westfalia trade union) and mining came to the city - and with it many additional residents. The last colliery was closed in 1992, and in 1996 the North Rhine-Westphalia State Garden Show "LaGaLü" was held on the former colliery site.
The Datteln-Hamm Canal runs through the south of Luen, a little further north the Lippe flows through the city center, where the Seseke also flows into.
The city is divided into the districts of Altlünen (in the north, very Münsterland, with the farming communities Alstedde, Nordlünen and Wethmar), Beckinghausen (in the east on the border with Werne), Brambauer (in the southwest), Gahmen (between the Canal and A 2), Horstmar (with Seepark and Loch), Lippholthausen, Niederaden (in the southeast on the border with Kamen), Lünen-Nord and -Süd.
