In the 12th century, the Lords of Lippe, later the Lippe House, were first mentioned in a document. They were made imperial counts in 1529 and imperial princes in 1789. Lippe joined the German Confederation in 1815 and became a free state in 1918. On January 21, 1947, the Free State of Lippe became with the land North Rhine-Westphalia united.

The districts of Detmold and Lemgo existed since 1932, in 1970 the communities were reorganized into the districts of Lemgo and Detmold. 16 cities and municipalities were formed. In 1973 the new Lippe district was formed from the previous Lemgo and Detmold districts.

The district of Lippe largely coincides in its territorial extent with the former principality and the state of Lippe, so it has a 900-year history.

  • Lippe is affected in the northwest by the Autobahn 2 Dortmund – Hanover. The A 33 from Bielefeld to Paderborn runs west past the district area. The most important federal roads are the B239 from Herford-Lage-Detmold-Schwalenberg to Höxter and the B66 Bielefeld - Barntrup. The B1 opens up the southwestern district area from Schlangen to Barntrup.
