The town location lies in the western part of the former principality and today's district lip. In addition to wooded and mountainous districts, the urban area is characterized by agriculture. Lage describes itself as the “city of sports”, as a “brick and sugar town”. In connection with the construction of the railway, Lage experienced a heyday at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Numerous Wilhelmine buildings, which are distributed over the city center, testify to this today. A well-known district of Lages is Health resort Hörste, the one in the south of the urban area in the nature park Teutoburg Forest lies.
Due to the sugar production, there can be a strong odor from October to December.
