The Bergkamen area has a history that goes back to the Romans. During the expansion of the Roman Empire between the Elbe and the Rhine, a legionary camp was built in what is now the Oberaden district. Until the end of the 19th century, the Bergkamen area consisted only of small villages and individual farms, before mining in the Ruhr area also reached the area in and around Bergkamen. So new "immigrants" came from all over the place and the population increased. ;
