history

Unna was first mentioned in a document in 1032. In 1288 the place received market rights, a few years later city rights. In 1389 brine was mined and salt extracted in what is now the Königsborn district; other important branches of business were brewing and making brandy. From 1469 Unna belonged to the Stadthanse, the city was considered wealthy. However, it lost its wealth through wars (30 Years War) and diseases (plague). In 1666 the city fell to Prussia.

There was an upswing after 1734, when a saltworks was founded in Königsborn. In 1799, a steam engine was used for brine pumping for the first time. In 1855 the city got a connection to the railway network. The actual industrialization began in 1870 with the mining of hard coal, see also Route of industrial culture (Ruhr area). Not even a hundred years later, the structural crisis in the Ruhr area forced the city to change from an industrial location to providing services: salt production was stopped in 1941, and the last mine closed in 1960.
