Haltern am See is a city in Hohe Mark Nature Park and in the Recklinghausen district. The residents feel often and happy to Münsterland proper, but administratively the city belongs to the Ruhr area, which also has some advantages (e.g. in terms of transport links).

Haltern Lakes

In Haltern am See there is not only the well-known reservoir or the Silbersee II, which is often overcrowded on weekends in midsummer (the motorway exit was therefore already closed due to backwater). The 17 Reservoir serves to supply drinking water to many places in the Münsterland and Ruhr area, but limited recreational use is possible. The use of motor boats on the lake is prohibited, only sailing ships, the electrically powered "seagull" and lifeboats are allowed to sail on the lake.
