Haltern am See is a city in Hohe Mark Nature Park and in the Recklinghausen district. The residents feel often and happy to Münsterland proper, but administratively the city belongs to the Ruhr area, which also has some advantages (e.g. in terms of transport links).

Haltern is at the confluence of lip and Stever. The latter is dammed into two reservoirs. The closest major city is Dülmen (12 km), the closest major city Recklinghausen.

Haltern can be reached by regional transport (regional express lines 2 and 42) every half hour Recklinghausen (Travel time 10 minutes), Gelsenkirchen (22 minutes), eat (30 minutes), Muenster (30 minutes), Duisburg (50 minutes) and every hour Dusseldorf (1:10 hours) and Mönchengladbach (1½ hours) approached. Haltern am See consists of the following districts 1 City center Haltern (Downtown area) and the villages 2 Sythes, 3 Lippramsdorf, 4 Hullern, 5 Hamm-Bossendorf, 6 Flaesheim, 7 Lavesum, 8 Holtwickas well as some peasant communities in the area. Local public transport with buses and collective call taxis goes to all areas in principle, but sometimes rarely clocked (> = 2 hours) or limited or not at all on weekends. The distances are manageable for cyclists (10-15 km, flat stretches), but a car is also recommended for excursions in the surrounding area.

Haltern Lakes
In Haltern am See there is not only the well-known reservoir or the Silbersee II, which is often overcrowded on weekends in midsummer (the motorway exit was therefore already closed due to backwater). The other lakes and ponds are then often less visited and offer quieter recreational opportunities.
Haltern reservoir
The 17 Reservoir serves to supply drinking water to many places in the Münsterland and Ruhr area, but limited recreational use is possible. The use of motor boats on the lake is prohibited, only sailing ships, the electrically powered "seagull" and lifeboats are allowed to sail on the lake. With the exception of the seaside resort, swimming in the lake is also prohibited.
