Bodenwerder on the Weser is primarily known as the birthplace and place of residence of the "baron of lies" Münchhausen, to whom the city has erected a memorial to the best stories of lies in the city center with several sculptures. Bodenwerder with its neighboring town Pollen is also called that Münchhausenland. Both places are also on the German fairy tale route.

Coming from Hameln there are two variants of the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route each other in Bodenwerder. While the western variant leads past the Kemnade monastery and touches the village, the eastern variant of the pilgrimage route remains on the eastern side of the Weser and leads through the narrow Lenne valley, parallel to the brook and the railway line to Linse. On the western route you can hike through the inner city of Bodenwerder to the southern Weser bridge and then tackle the steep climb to the Königszinne at approx. 270 m above sea level and back down to Buchhagen. The pilgrim stamp is given to pilgrims in Bodenwerder-Kemnade in the St. Marien monastery church.
