Eurowings - Eurowings

Eurowings is an airline based in Dusseldorf and home airport in Cologne / Bonn. She is a 100% daughter of Lufthansa. Within the Lufthansa Group, Eurowings handles domestic German and European routes away from the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The Germanwings and Eurowings brands were merged and Eurowings is positioning itself as a low-cost airline in domestic, European and intercontinental air traffic. Regardless of the low-cost airline label, Eurowings also sells transfer connections.

history

In the wake of the increasing numbers of low-cost carriers Easyjet, Ryanair or TUIfly (at that time still Hapag Lloyd Express) reacted Lufthansa and founded his own company for low-cost airlines, Germanwings. It was a subsidiary of the Eurowings company, in which Lufthansa was involved at the time. By purchasing all of the shares, Germanwings has been 100% part of the Lufthansa Group since 2009. It started with existing aircraft from Eurowings of the type Airbus A319 and A320 and during the summer months derivatives from Boeing and McDonnell Douglas were often leased. Since 2015, the flights have only been operated under the Eurowings brand.

fleet

Eurowings mainly uses Airbus A319-100 and A320-200, and Bombardier DHC-8-400 on less frequented routes. There are also a handful of Airbus A330-200s and Boeing 737-800s in use.

Alliances

Eurowings does not belong to any alliance.

In contrast to many other low-cost airlines, Eurowings offers connecting flights and can therefore fall back on a far more extensive network.

Classes of carriage

Since taking over the domestic German routes from Lufthansa, Eurowings has been offering three tariff classes: Best, Smart and Basic, which roughly correspond to the conventional business, economy and low-cost classes of service. Within a tariff class, the flight price can vary depending on the time of booking.

The tariff class Best corresponds roughly to the product that is also offered on Lufthansa flights within Europe in Business Class. The seats for this fare class are in the front rows of the aircraft, the middle seat is not occupied, two pieces of baggage can be checked in and any items from the on-board menu can be ordered free of charge. "Best" class passengers have access at the departure airport to a Lufthansa Business lounge (if available).

The tariff class Smart corresponds to the classic economy class product from Lufthansa. One piece of baggage can be checked in free of charge, and a snack and a (non-alcoholic) drink are given free of charge on board.

The tariff class basic corresponds to a conventional low-cost product in which only the pure transport service (including one free piece of hand luggage) is included. Meals on board are subject to a charge, and various services in the other tariff classes (e.g. checked baggage) can also be booked for a surcharge. In contrast to Smart and Best, the Basic tariff class cannot be booked via the Lufthansa website.

The number of seats in the aircraft is 144 or 150 seats.

Lounges

Eurowings does not operate any lounges itself, but travelers are granted access to the Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounges in accordance with the following provisions:

  • Fare class travelers Best are given access to Lufthansa Business Lounges at the departure airport or, if offered, to contractual lounges operated by partners.
  • Miles & More Frequent Travelers have access to Lufthansa Business Lounges (no contract lounges) at the departure airport, provided they are in the tariff class Smart or Best are booked.
  • Miles & More Senators and HON Circle Members have access to Lufthansa Senator Lounges at the departure airport or, if offered, to contractual lounges operated by partners.
  • StarAlliance Gold status customers, on the other hand, only receive lounge access regardless of their place of departure if they are in the tariff class Best are booked.

Frequent flyer program

Germanwings has distinguished itself by being the first low-cost carrier to start a frequent flyer program. The so-called Boomerang Club, which was also taken over by Eurowings after the name change, enables the collection of award miles. After 16 flights you get a free flight and you can also collect points from other partners.

At Eurowings you can also earn points from the Lufthansa frequent flyer program Miles & More Redeem and collect. However, you cannot use Lufthansa Boomerang points.

Check in

You can already check in for the flight in question on the Internet. Alternatively, there are check-in machines at all airports. Officially, only passengers who check in baggage are allowed to check in at the counter (Smart and Best customers even without baggage).

Booking options

On the one hand, it is possible to book Eurowings flights in a travel agency. On the other hand, the flights (mostly cheaper) can be booked on the Internet: once via booking portals or directly via the company's website www.eurowings.com. Eurowings flights are also available via the Lufthansa booking platform; here, too, it may be worth comparing prices between the airlines' booking sites.
