Industrial Heritage Route - Route der Industriekultur

Map of the western ...
... and the eastern "Lippe side canal"

The Route of industrial culture - industrial culture on the Lippe lists stations of the Industrial Heritage Route along the Lippe, the northernmost river in the Ruhr area, which should actually be called the Ruhr-Emscher-Lippe area. Mining arrived late here, but the river was used for shipping early on, and later the "Lippe Side Canal" took over this task. You can research the traces just as much as the Prussian past of the northern coal pot or the small and large, old and new industrial companies in the region.

The route of industrial culture represents as Holiday route in the Ruhr area special industrial monuments and areas of the industrial landscape in the form of road routes for motor vehicles and also for that bicycle in front. In addition to the Anchor points, which form the backbone of the route, convey the Themed routes always a special topic, a local area or something special in the history of the Ruhr area.

The theme route with the number 7 "Industrial Culture on the Lippe" has the northernmost river in the Ruhr area in its sights. From 1823 to 1827 it was made navigable through locks, some of which are stops on the route, but also an old port, water towers and works and the Prussian past. Inland shipping has long since switched to the canal, which was previously built as the Lippe-Seiten canal. Today his name is from Rhine to the Datteln Sea Wesel-Datteln Canal and from there to its end point Datteln-Hamm Canal. Many, sometimes surprising structures on this waterway are approached by the route.

Mining has moved further north over the years and is now taking place under or across the Lippe. Some mines have already been closed, the AV in Marl will continue to produce until 2016[outdated] . Settlements, museums, heaps and other evidence of mining are also part of the route.

Finally, the route also offers an insight into industrial companies along the Lippe, be they small like a brick factory or large like the chemical park in Marl.

preparation

The northern edge of the Ruhr area has fewer large cities and is partly rural. Nevertheless, there are good service facilities and accommodation options in the cities (from east to west): Hamm, Werne, Came and Bergkamen, Luenen, Ludinghausen, Dates, Olfen, Haltern am See, Marl, Gladbeck, Bottrop, Dinslaken and Wesel. If that's not enough or because it is fully booked / expensive due to local events, you can switch to the surrounding regions: Lower Rhine, Münsterland and cities further south in the Ruhr area.

Information on the individual stations of theme route 7 is provided by the official RIK travel guide (see literature), the respective anchor point or the corresponding one website.

getting there

The places along the Lippe or along the northern edge of the Ruhr area are easy to reach, the nearest airports are in Münster / Osnabrück, Dortmund and Dusseldorf. The main train stations in Hamm and Recklinghausen have long-distance traffic stops, but most train routes run in an east-west direction on the Oberhausen-Gelsenkirchen-Herne-Dortmund line further south, so that a change must be made there. Kamen, Castrop-Rauxel, Haltern, Dorsten and Wesel can be reached by regional rail transport (runs in a north-south direction), the smaller towns are accessible via bus lines. For the motor vehicle there is the one that runs south of the Lippe Motorway A 2 with the connected motorways (from east to west) A 1, A 45, A 43, A 52, A 31 and A 3. The federal highway B 58 runs north of the Lippe. It is important to note that some cities are part of the Environmental zone Ruhr area, which only allows the entry of vehicles with certain badges (current status under Ruhr area # car).
