Industrial Heritage Route - Route der Industriekultur

The Route of industrial culture - Erzbahn-Emscherbruch lists stations of the Industrial Heritage Route between Bochum and Recklinghausen, which are located along the former ore railway and the Emscherbruch (former Ewald railway). There are now two Railway cycle paths.

Route profile

  • Length: approx. 18 km
  • Signposting: present, EPR route logo but almost everywhere, ore railway has its own logo, often faded
  • Slopes: There are no major inclines, there is a slight uphill climb from the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Ewald colliery
  • Path condition: Ore railway route with asphalt, the rest of the route with approx. 4 km of water-bound surface
  • Traffic load: largely free of traffic, an intersection with a lot of traffic
  • Family suitability: The route is not so suitable for small children because of the great heights. The backups, however, meet high requirements.

The route of industrial culture represents as Holiday route in the Ruhr area special industrial monuments and areas of the industrial landscape in the form of road routes for motor vehicles and also for that bicycle in front. In addition to the Anchor points, which form the backbone of the route, convey the Themed routes always a special topic, a local area or something special in the history of the Ruhr area.

The themed route with the number 8 "Erzbahn-Emscherbruch" is divided into two neighboring areas:

  • the former ore railway line from the Bochumer Verein (now Westpark with the Jahrhunderthalle) to Gelsenkirchen to the port of Grimberg on the Rhine-Herne Canal, also known as Ore railway line.
  • the Emscherbruch north of the Rhine-Herne Canal near Herten and Recklinghausen. The Emscherbruch is a local recreation area with forest, clearings and small bodies of water around the artificial Ewaldsee, which is located west of the Ewald colliery.

Both parts are ideal for exploring by bike or on foot. The route is only part of the Emscher Park cycle path. To the north of the Rhine-Herne Canal, you should orientate yourself on this main route.

preparation

The middle to northern Ruhr area offers with cities Bochum, Herne, Gelsenkirchen and the circle Recklinghausen good service facilities and accommodation. If that's not enough or because it is fully booked / expensive due to local events, you can go to the other cities in the Ruhr area or Münsterland dodge.

Information on the individual stations of theme route 8 can be found in the official RIK travel guide (see literature), the respective anchor point or the corresponding one website.

The anchor points are also to be understood as the first point of contact for information seekers:

getting there

The main train stations in Bochum and Recklinghausen have long-distance traffic stops, most train routes run in an east-west direction on the Oberhausen-Gelsenkirchen-Herne-Dortmund rail, so that you have to change to the north. Recklinghausen can be reached by regional rail transport (runs in a north-south direction), the smaller towns are accessible via bus lines. For the motor vehicle, there are the highways A 40 near Bochum, the A 42 near Gelsenkirchen and Herne, the A 2 near Herten and Recklinghausen as well as the one coming from the south A 43which leads past Bochum, Herne and Recklinghausen to Münster. It is important to note that most cities are part of the Environmental zone Ruhr area, which only allows the entry of vehicles with certain badges (current status under Ruhr area # car).

You can park for free in parking lot 2 at the Westpark. At the northern end of the Erzbahntrasse is not only the port, but also the Gelsenkirchen Zoo, where paid parking spaces are available. The Ewald colliery is located on Doncaster-Platz, where you can park for free. There are enough places available even on weekends.

Here we go

Erzbahn railway line

The approximately 10 km long ore railway line was built in several sections from 1912 to 1929. It connected the Bochum and Schalke association (association = collection of large iron / steel companies) and several mines and coking plants with each other or with the newly built Rhine-Herne Canal to the north. Since the route was only laid after the otherwise usual east-west connections, it had to be raised several meters. This was done skillfully with dams and bridges and in the area between Gelsenkirchen and Wanne even with a 340 m long row of bridges, the pillar bridge.

After the closure of most of the operations, the railway line was converted into a cycle and hiking trail, most of the bridges were restored and reinstalled, and some new, spectacular ones were added (e.g. Erzbahnschwinge and Grimberger sickle). So you can comfortably cycle or hike on the elevated, finely asphalted route and make one or two detours to the testimonies of the history of the Ruhr area on the right and left.

Built as an exhibition hall and then reused as a blower machine hall for the blast furnaces of the Bochumer Verein. The industrial cathedral was renovated in 1993 and provided with a glass porch, since then it has been used for events: RuhrTrienale, bicycle summer of industrial culture, presentation of the 1liveKrone and Steiger Award, location of the ExtraSchicht and Urbanatix, rock, pop and classical concerts, trade fairs.
Visitor center, nice bar of the century, additional catering at events.

  • 1  West Park, 44793 Bochum, At the Jahrhunderthalle 1 (Directions sketch, also for the navigation system: Gahlensche Straße 15; By public transport: from Bochum Hbf with tram 302 in the direction of Gelsenkirchen or 310 in the direction of Bochum-Höntrop get off at the stop "Bochumer Verein / Jahrhunderthalle" and walk up the stairs). Landscape park on the site of the former "Bochum Association for Mining and Cast Steel Manufacture", with the Centennial Hall in the center. Pump house (company canteen and catering), turbine hall, Colosseum, water tower and cooling towers still bear witness to industrial use, but most of the buildings have disappeared. Spontaneous and consciously planted green spaces on different levels of the site, bridges, staircases, stairs and water basins create an exciting mix of Industrial nature which is also gladly accepted by the neighborhood (barbecue on Sundays, ball games in the meadow, children's playground with steel dragon). Buildings and paths partially illuminated at night.Open: Open all day.Price: free access.
