background

The first written mention under the name Villa Embrici is from the year 828. In 1040 the collegiate church of St. Martini was built. On May 31, 1233 Emmerich was raised to the city. Between 1307 and 1570 Emmerich was closely related to the Hanseatic League. Trade and handicrafts flourished. Emmerich has been surrounded by walls and secured with gates since the 14th century. The Aldegundis Church dates from the 15th century. Emmerich experienced its heyday until the 16th century and was called Embrica decora (= magnificent Emmerich) because of its secular and ecclesiastical buildings. The decline of Emmerich began in 1672 with the occupation of the city by French troops. Steam shipping reached its peak in the first half of the 19th century and made the port of Emmerich very important. In 1856 the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway line was opened. During the Second World War, Emmerich was 91% destroyed by a British air raid on October 7, 1944. In 1965 the last section of the Holland Line motorway between Emmerich and Hamminkeln was opened. The Emmerich Rhine Bridge was also opened in 1965. In 1966 the Dutch line was electrified. Since December 1, 2001, the city has been called Emmerich am Rhein, previously the name was Emmerich.

Rhine promenade with outdoor catering (view to the west)
  • The Rhine promenade was redesigned in 2004. It is very popular with day trippers and locals alike. In the eastern part of the promenade is the Gastronomy mile, where guests can choose their favorite restaurant or café from a variety of providers. As soon as the sun shines, the outdoor dining areas under the uniformly red parasols are very popular. The restaurant visitors and the strollers, who use the entire length of the Rhine promenade between the Rheinpark and Martinikirche for a walk, can observe each other. Both groups enjoy the view of the Rhine, which reaches its widest point here and flows calmly past in the direction of the North Sea. The walkers have to share the promenade with the cycle tourists, who also like to ride this route as part of various cycle routes. At the western end there is a sandy beach (currently unmanaged), next to which a staircase leads down to the water.
