Kalkar is a city on Lower Rhine and borders in the north Emmerich on the Rhine, in the east Rees, in the south Xanten and Uedem as well as in the west Kleve and Bedburg-Hau.
background
The city has a beautiful medieval center and other attractions. The disputes over the construction of the "fast breeder", a planned nuclear power plant in the 1970s, which was completed but never put into operation, made for greater awareness. By train
The next train stations are in Goch (12 km). Trains of the RE 10 “Niers-Express” stop in Goch every hour, from Monday to Friday even every half hour Kleve above Krefeld to Dusseldorf. Alternatively, you can also use the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine to Emmerich station. A night train from Amsterdam to Munich and Zurich stops here every day, the RE 5 (Rhein-Express) every hour and the regional train RB 35 ("Der Weseler") during rush hour.

The city center, which is interesting for tourists, is only 860 x 360 m in size and can be easily explored on foot. Cobblestones can pose a problem for wheelchair users. All districts can be reached by bike. There are no inclines or descents worth mentioning. Kalkar is a stop on the long-distance cycle path "2-country route"that of Nijmegen to Aachen leads. The long-distance cycle path begins in the neighboring town of Xanten "Roman route"that along the lip after Detmold runs. - 3 Possibly Church from 1697 - in the Kesselstrasse
- 4 Beguinage in Kesselstrasse is one of the largest and most beautiful medieval patrician houses on the Lower Rhine. There is a restaurant here today.
- 5 Ulftsches house - on the church square, built around 1550, late medieval town house, today restaurant "De Gildenkamer"
- 6 Windmill The Kalkar windmill from 1770/71 on Jakobswall is the largest windmill on the Lower Rhine with a 27.5 m cap height and 25 m blade diameter. It was restored in 1995/96 and is fully functional with two grinders. There are tours. There is a restaurant in the mill.
- 7 St. Pancras The parish church in Altkalkar was first mentioned in 1281, completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War in 160 and rebuilt in the same place from 1689. In 1892 it was destroyed again and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style.
Wissel
- 8 St. Clement The village church is an earlier collegiate church from the 12th century. In the southeast corner of the church square, the Wissel Abbey Museum in a former canon house.
- 9 House Kemnade The house Kemnade, originally built as a moated castle Grieth, still surrounded on three sides by moats, mid-16th century. Around 1850 it was rebuilt in the late classicist style.
- 10 Wisseler See - Leisure park with campsite and natural swimming pool.
- 1 Wisseler dunes Glider airfield and the nature reserve "Wisseler Dünen" in the middle of gravel pits
