Tourist Attractions

The Venn in Emsdetten
  • 1 St Pancras Church - Already in the 9th century AD. A wooden chapel is said to have stood here, which was demolished in 1179 and replaced by a small stone church. This was a cruciform church in the Romanesque style and already had a tower over 40 meters high. From now on it was the symbol of the city. When the old church was replaced by a new one in 1470, the tower was retained. In 1840 the vault collapsed due to several lightning strikes. So a completely new building had to be found. The first neo-Gothic hall church in Westphalia was built here based on a design by F. A. Stüler. In 1903 the tower was also replaced by a new one. The external appearance has not changed since then. Inside, in addition to a Way of the Cross and a Joseph Altar from the early 20th century, the Christ sculpture from 1723 is particularly worth seeing. Since September 2012, all municipalities in Emsdetten have been merged to form the municipality of Sankt Pankratius. This includes 26,000 believers, which is larger than many a diocese in Germany.
  • 2 Deitmar's court - originally one of the four farms that are considered to be the origin of Emsdetten.
