Billerbeck is a city in Münsterland, more precisely in a circle Coesfeld. Due to its location in the tree mountains, the place of pilgrimage and state-approved resort is also called "The Pearl of the Tree Mountains".
background
Billerbeck is a small Münsterland town that existed as a small rural settlement before the year 800. In 809 the then bishop of Münster died, St. Liudger in "Billurbecci", afterwards the small place became a place of pilgrimage. In 1217 a prince-bishop's court in Billerbeck is mentioned, in 1302 the place receives city rights. The rest of the story is an up and down between the plague, Anabaptists and city fire. The Ludgerus Cathedral will later be built on the place where St. Liudger died. Today the tourism-oriented city has around 80,000 overnight stays a year.

The runs from Coesfeld via Billerbeck and Havixbeck RB63, the "Baumbergebahn" at least every hour from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., earlier / later on weekdays and sometimes every half hour. The line is single-track from Coesfeld to Havixbeck. There are still connections in Münster Hamm, Dortmund, Eat, Enschede, Warendorf, Osnabrück and Rheine. In Coesfeld there are connections to Enschede, Dortmund and Dorsten.
The Station building is no longer used for rail operations (train tickets are only available on the train) but houses a bike station, a kiosk and a café with an art / cultural program as well as the historic train car that has been converted into a conference room.

The bus service is operated by the Regional traffic Münsterland (RVM).

- The death chapel of St. Liudger is located in the south tower (the Carrara marble altarpiece there shows the death of the saint), but he was buried in Werden monastery. In the north tower hang the five bells of the neo-Gothic hall church with transept built between 1892 and 1898 by Wilhelm Rincklake from Münster. The pair of towers, over 100 meters high, was built from Baumberger sandstone. The window glazing, based on the Gothic models, was spared from war damage, it is rich in detail and looks very imposing.

- The exterior of the rather simple late Romanesque hall church has a rich, art-historically valuable interior with strong French influences. The Magdalen Altar from 1611 hangs in the southern apse and shows the parable of the 'banquet in the Pharisee's house'. On the west wall are the remains of the Paulus altar from 1719 with a coat of arms. The late Gothic, richly decorated, eight-sided baptismal font dates from 1497 and shows baptismal scenes from the Old and New Testament. The stone Easter candlestick from 1500 is attributed to the Bunickman workshop. There is a small information leaflet about the interior in the entrance area (for a small fee).
- The area around the church is also worth a visit, as there are a number of old warehouse buildings here. On one side there is the Kleine Cafe and on the other Cox Orange, a restaurant.

- On the Jewish cemetery am Hagen (L580) along the Berkel still around 20 old gravestones are preserved. The first Jews settled in Billerbeck in the second half of the 17th century, but first the burials were carried out in Coesfeld. The cemetery in Billerbeck was used from 1879 to 1939, in 2006 the forecourt was redesigned with two memorial stones. A Foundation, endowment is committed to the care of the cemetery and the restoration of the tombstones.

- Ludgerus fountain, Ludgeristraße (in the park). Mentioned for the first time in 1541, the contained well system of a small spring was expanded several times, and today it also includes a small chapel. The fountain is located in the middle of a park with a dense tree population. The legend afterwards Saint Ludgerus took two geese and put them in the Billerbecker Berg (or threw them into a dried up well). - Nature reserve Berkel Spring
- The Berkel rises from a small alluvial forest in the southeast of the city, street "An der Berkel" or approach via the "Nottulner Straße". A pond is clearly visible and has been declared the official Berkel spring opposite the street Austemkamp, but the Berkel is found in the entire forest, which it can sometimes flood in heavy rain. The approximately 110km long stream flows via Billerbeck to Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn and Vreden before it flows into the IJssel in the Netherlands. - Sint-Lürs-Weg: The last journey or pilgrimage from Saint Ludger went from the St. Lamberti Church in Coesfeld via Gerleve, Altstätte and Westhellen to Billerbeck to the house where he died in 809 and is now the Ludgerus Cathedral. The Sankt-Ludgerus-Weg has been restored since 2005 and is now used as a pilgrimage route. At its beginning near the Gerleve monastery is the Ludgeri-Rast, a memorial with Ludgerus resting exhausted and blessing the Münsterland.

By bicycle:
- The Berkel route follows the course of the river from its source to its confluence with the IJssel in the Netherlands. The approximately 120km long cycle path is flat, leads through natural regions and touches the cities: Billerbeck, Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn and Vreden, (NL) Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem, Almen and Zutphen. The route is part of the cross-border concept of Flusslandschaft.eu, which also includes cycle paths along the IJssel, Aa and Slinge.
- Billerbeck is also on the 100 castles route of the Münsterland.
- Numerous sandstone buildings in Billerbeck and the other Baumberge communities Havixbeck, Rosendahl, Coesfeld and Nottuln are in the Baumberger sandstone route thematized. The over 200km long cycle path (asphalt & gravel) is designed as a medium-difficult circuit (a total of around 1,000 meters in altitude) in both directions and shows around 80 sights, the highlight is the sandstone museum in Havixbeck. In the villages themselves there are short (1-3km) walking paths and in the tree mountains there are short to medium-length walking paths (35km in total).
- The Railway station in Billerbeck contains a very nice and delicious art cafe and a rental station for bicycles.
