The Kemnader lake is a reservoir the Dysentery in the Ruhr area between Bochum, Witten and Hattingen. Its length is about 3 km, its average width a good 400 m. It has an area of 1.25 km² and an average depth of 2.4 m. The lake was opened in September 1980 and forms the center of the Kemnade leisure center.
The lake was created to improve the quality of the Ruhr water. He does this job all too well. In recent years the aquatic plant Elodea Kanadensis (Canadian waterweed - known to every aquarium enthusiast) has spread, so that a mowing boat had to be purchased. The plant is an indicator of good water quality, but it hinders boat traffic.
The leisure facilities concentrate on the east end (Heveney) where the Ruhr flows into the lake and the west end (Oveney) where the weir is located. The port of Heveney is located a little off the mouth of the Ruhr at the end of a long bay. Gibraltar (named after the former Gibraltar colliery, the building of which is now used as a leisure facility) is located on the north bank near the weir. Unlike in the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar has the widest part of the lake.

By bicycle

There are plenty of parking spaces in Heveney (at the upper end of the lake) and in Oveney (at the weir). When the weather is nice on weekends, the rush is often so great that parking spaces can become scarce.
mobility
There are 3 separate, paved circular paths around the lake, one for cyclists, one for inline skiers and one for pedestrians and joggers. Each of the three paths has an average length of 9 km (if you use the bridge under the motorway) or 11 km (if you use the river bridge at the 'Lohmann' factory).
Two passenger ferries operate in the summer months, both of which have restaurants on board.
- the MS Kemnade runs on the lake, 1 hour round trip
- the MS Schwalbe docks in the Heveney swimming pool and goes up the Ruhr (passing the Herbede lock) to Witten-Bommern, a 2-hour tour
activities
- The lake is ideal for short or long walks.
- The boat rental in Heveney offers rowing boats, pedal boats and sailing boats (sports boat license required. The school for the sports boat license is also located here. The wind conditions in Heveney are not ideal - little wind.
- The boat rental in Gibraltar rents out rowing boats and pedal boats (and possibly kayaks - ask).
- There is a separate cycle path for cyclists (please show consideration for the children).
- Inline skaters will find good conditions on the paved paths.
- The circular route is also very popular with joggers.
- For children there are 2 playgrounds in Heveney.
- An indoor / outdoor pool with a separate sauna and a large sunbathing area in Heveney
- Boat tours on the lake or up the Ruhr.
- Surfing on the lake in Gibraltar. Surfboards can also be rented here.
- There are some barbecue areas in Heveney and Oveney, but they fill up quickly. Barbecuing away from the barbecue areas is not permitted.
- The meadow on the hill above the bike path in Gibraltar on the north shore of the lake is recommended for sunbathing. Towards the afternoon the sun is no longer so favorable.
- There is a mini golf course in Oveney.
- A golf course (for beginners) is located in Heveney a little above the mouth of the Ruhr.
- The meadow below the swimming pool in Heveney is popular with children who want to fly their kites.
- Dog lovers can let their animals run on the area above the Ruhr estuary between the Ruhr and the Mühlengraben. The best way to get there is at the Lohmann factory, where there is also a car park.
The following locations are within walking distance of the lake:
- Haus Kemnade moated castle with farmhouse museum, Grumbt musical instrument collection and Ostasitika collection. From Oveney about 10 minutes.
- Spiepel village church with old paintings. From Oveney about 30 minutes.
- The old Lohmann factory. The factory is still in operation, but some of the buildings are very picturesque. There is also a pedestrian bridge over the Ruhr. From Heveney about 10 minutes.
- Hardenstein castle ruins on the left bank of the river. In the summer months, a small passenger ferry runs across the Ruhr. From Heveney approx. 30 minutes upstream.
- the Muttental - the cradle of Ruhr mining, on the left side of the Ruhr. You can visit the Nachtigall colliery (entry - location on the Industrial Heritage Route) and many relics of early mining (free entry). About 45 minutes from Heveney upstream.

overnight stay
The facility is designed for day visitors. You can find overnight accommodation in the nearby cities of Bochum and Witten, both approx. 10 km from the complex.
Water quality
The water quality is very good - the Ruhr is the region's drinking water reservoir. So don't panic if you should fall into water and get seawater in your mouth. Just spit it out again. But I wouldn't drink the water unfiltered.

There is a doctor in season. There are sufficient lifebuoys on the bank for emergencies. There are also emergency telephones in some places - but it is certainly not wrong to have a cell phone with you. This is faster than if you only have to walk 100 meters to the next phone.
restoration
- There is a cafe with a terrace in Heveney and in Gibraltar. Both are about 200m from the water. In Heveney there is also the access road in between.
- There is a beach bar in Heveney.
- There are several kiosks right by the water that also offer benches.
Disabled person
The paths around the lake are as good as barrier-free - level, paved paths and a few stairs that can be easily avoided. Unfortunately, the ferries are a bit problematic. They will certainly help you check in, but there is no elevator on board so you cannot get to the upper deck.
children
For children there are 2 more challenging playgrounds in Heneney. The swimming pool offers a large water slide, a moderately deep outdoor pool and a toddler pool in the indoor pool.
Tips
- the best place to sit and watch the action on the lake is at the boat rental in Gibraltar
- if you like solitude:
- jog around the lake in autumn when it gets dark when the mist damage is coming from the water
- or very early in the morning in summer - you will only meet a handful of like-minded people or a few anglers
regulate
- As cycling: please adjust your speed. Children already run on the bike path.
- As a pedestrian:
- please do not stand unnecessarily on the bike path
- please do not enter the closed-off areas for wildlife on the south bank.
- as a boat driver:
- please do not go to the bird sanctuary
- please do not drive into the locked bays on the south bank. They serve as spawning grounds for the fish.
- Motor boats are prohibited on the lake. Exceptions only apply to the DLRG and commercial shipping.
- please do not feed the swans and ducks; the animals find enough to eat and the leftovers rot in the water.
- swimming in the lake is not permitted
disadvantage
- on weekends, especially when the weather is nice, the facility is very crowded
- Depending on the wind direction, you can hear some noise from the nearby A43 motorway
- There are only 2 (unkempt) toilets on the north bank for € 0.20 per use (in an emergency, use the toilets in the cafés).
