Hattingen is a city in the south Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Hattingen was first named in 990 Hatneggen mentioned, the city was founded in 1396. In 1554 the city was recognized by the Hanseatic League, the location helped to a brisk textile trade.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, coal mining with several mines became an important factor in urban development. From 1854, with the establishment of the Henrichshütte, a steelworks, Hattingen became an important industrial location. In addition to the old town, the blast furnace is the main attraction of the city and can be visited. The industrial action of the 1980s, the closure of the plant from 1987 and the subsequent structural change shape the city to this day.

The historic old town was threatened with demolition after war damage and decay in the post-war period, but this could largely be prevented. Several festivals spread over the year invite guests, with the historic Christmas market from the end of November and Christmas as the highlight.
