Map of Juchen

background

On the occasion of the community reform in 1975, the new community Jüchen was formed from the communities Jüchen, Hochneukirch, Garzweiler and Bedburdyck. Today Jüchen consists of the main town and 27 districts, which are spread over around 70 square kilometers of the urban area. In addition to the settlements, the urban area is mainly characterized by agriculture and the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine (or the recultivated areas). Jüchen is one of the most forest-poor places in Germany and only has larger contiguous tree populations in the area of Schloss Dyck with the adjacent districts of Damm and Aldenhoven.

mobility

Juchen is very well connected to the trunk road network. The inner cities of the cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne can be reached (outside of peak hours) in 30 and 50 respectively by car. The surrounding medium-sized centers Grevenbroich, Mönchengladbach, Neuss and Korschenbroich can also be easily reached from Jüchen by car and various bus routes that also ensure mobility within the town.

The main town in particular suffers considerably from heavy truck traffic. On the one hand, this is due to the open-cast mine, which trucks loaded with soil do not approach via the designated pit edge road, but rather via the B59 (i.e. the through-town road). In addition, there is the destination and source traffic of the surrounding industrial areas (in particular Regiopark and Neusser Straße (Europalager 3M, Polo) as well as connecting traffic between the A61 and the A46 / A540. This is likely to increase due to the 42 hectare industrial area planned between Grevenbroich and Jüchen .

The relatively narrow and heavily traveled through-town B59 (Kölner Straße / Odenkirchener Straße) has only sections of bike paths that are structurally separated from the carriageway (sometimes only on one side). In several sections there are bicycle protection lanes on the road, but they are at the expense of the already narrow lanes, i.e. they are inevitably used by buses and trucks in particular. Other sections of the route, especially in the town center, do not have any cycle paths / protective strips.

The other districts are easy to reach by bike, so that bike excursions are ideal for exploring the urban area. Often, however, the shortest connection is via busy country roads, so it is advisable to take detours via bike paths and dirt roads. Juchen is part of Rhineland cycling region; there are nine nodes in the urban area.

The bus stops in the city area are gradually being made barrier-free. However, this is to be seen relatively insofar as there are in some cases no sidewalks wide enough for wheelchair users, especially in the smaller districts.

Garzweiler II opencast mine

Jüchen offers a perfect starting point to visit the brown coal opencast mine. Various methods are possible here. From cycling to walks to long hikes can be easily carried out from here.

  • The Garzweiler I open-cast lignite mine at Juchen. This former mining area is currently being filled in very slowly. From the Jüchen train station you can get to the pit by always going south through the underpass. Walking time about 5 minutes. Here you have an impressive view of the size of the pit and the immense machines. There is an interesting ensemble between the wind power plants and caloric power plants on the horizon and the lack of the landscape due to the lignite mining. At the edge of the pit you can follow a forest road to the east. This becomes a path that runs along the edge of the pit without any obstacles. On this way there are always new perspectives. Deer were released in the large area. Various species of birds of prey can also be observed here.
  • The Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine near Hochneukirch west of the BAB 46. In this active mining area is currently (March 2017) work. From the Hochneukirchen train station, follow Peter-Busch-Straße (this street changes its name to "Am Hackhausener Weg") to the south until it ends at the autobahn. Here you follow the forest / sidewalk towards the west until you can cross the motorway at the underpass of Holzer Straße. Walking time about 20-30 minutes.
