Map of Erkelenz

background

The city consists of the districts Bellinghoven, Berverath, Commerden, Erkelenz, Genehen, Geneiken, Gerderath, Gerderhahn, Golkrath, Granterath, Hetzerath, Holzweiler, Houverath, Katzem, Keyenberg, Kleinbouslar, Kuckum, Kückhoven, Lövenich, Matzerath, Mennekrath, Neu- Borschemich, Neu-Immerath, Oberwestrich, Oerath, Oestrich, Scheidt, Schwanenberg, Tenholt, Terheeg, Unterwestrich, Venrath and Wockerath.

While the city can look back on more than 1000 years of history and tradition, the eastern parts of the city area have been demolished by RWE Power AG's Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine from 2006 to 2045. Over five thousand people from ten localities therefore have to be relocated. The easternmost part of the city, the village of Pesch, was demolished in 2010 and the new villages of Immerath (new) and Borschemich (new) at the Kückhoven and Erkelenz-Nord locations have largely been laid out. Despite or because of this relocation, the city of Erkelenz is a modern city that looks forward to your visit.

Only the Neumühle and Immerather Mühle are still preserved. The latter soon fell victim to open-cast lignite mining.
