The Uhlenfänger

Waldkappel in the Topographia Hassiae of w: Matthäus Merian 1655

An owl once nested high up in the tower of the Waldkappel St. Georgs Church. Since the nocturnal, unknown animal was rarely seen, it was decided to catch the strange animal. After this was successful, the whole small town looked at the "strange" bird. It was decided to bring the animal to the museum in Kassel. There people laughed uproariously at the ignorant Waldkappeler and from then on ridiculed them as "Uhlenfänger" (= owl catcher).

The term "Uhlenfänger" is still used in Waldkappel today. This is how the Uhlenfänger fair is celebrated in the small town.

The Waldkappel hobby dialect artist Karl Koch also appeared as a Uhlenfänger at public events and is therefore remembered by many.

Lookout tower on the goat club

With a height of 10 - 12 m, the tower on the Ziegenküppel is not a giant among the region's observation towers. The building still offers a beautiful panoramic view.

The small but well-designed observation tower is an insider tip among the vantage points in the North Hesse region. Climbing the beautifully landscaped and freely accessible tower is definitely worth it. The new wooden tower, which was initiated and built by a group of committed citizens from Burghofen, has been in place since the end of 2009. For more detailed information on the tower see article "Lookout tower goat club".

  • Location and ascent - The 19 m high "Pioneer Tower" is about 2 km south of Waldkappel-Kernstadt on the 415 m high Mäuseberg. Ascent: From Leipziger Straße (Hauptstraße in Waldkappel) via Braugasse and the street "An der Drift" up to the forest. If you want, you can also drive to the edge of the forest. There is a small parking lot on the left side of the street in the area of the last house (with space for about 5 cars; location: 51 ° 8 '24 "N.9 ° 52 ′ 30 ″ E). We continue on the Barbarossaweg (about 10 - 12%, gravel road in the forest) towards Centbuche. At this crossroads there is a refuge and four benches with tables. Here a small, signposted path branches off towards the tower. Route length: around 1.5 km easy with around 160 meters of altitude. For the ascent via the 90-step open staircase of the airy steel lattice tower you have to be a bit free from giddiness. After this test, however, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view.
  • view - To the northwest to the Hohen Meissner; to the west in that Stölzinger Mountains with the wide valley of the "Schemmerngrund", with good visibility you can see the in the southeast Thuringian Forest with the Big Island Mountain see. There are no panorama boards on the tower. A few striking points of the beautiful west view towards Schemmerngrund are therefore entered in the panorama below.
  • Tower history:
- First tower construction - After the First World War, the first observation tower in Waldkappel called "Schau ins Land" had to be demolished due to a dilapidation.
- The first pioneer tower - The 415 m high Mäuseberg was chosen as the location for a new tower, which allowed a better panoramic view than the point of the old tower. The building owner of the new tower was the beautification association. The city of Waldkappel provided the timber free of charge. The tower was built by 12 men from the 1st command of the Pioneer Battalion 29 from Hann. Münden. On Sunday, August 15, 1937 at 3:30 p.m., the Beautification Association finally invited to the opening of the 12.5 m high pioneer tower on the Mäuseberg.
- Today's pioneer tower - In 1955 the pioneer tower had to be closed due to dilapidation. As a replacement, the city decided in 1964 to have a galvanized steel lattice tower built. The new tower was significantly higher at 19 m, as the trees had grown since 1937. On June 25, 1965, the building was ready for its intended use.
