History

The first written mention of the place Unterammergau, which belonged to the dominion of the Ettal monastery until 1803, took place in 1280. In the following years the place became independent. For more than 300 years, whetstone making was an important line of business in Unterammergau alongside agriculture, which helped the town to flourish in the second half of the 19th century. The finished grinding tools were exported to many countries. Due to the industrialization, the Wetzschein industry came to a standstill. In 2000, a European Cup race with horn sledges took place in Unterammergau and in 2001 the World Cup race in natural track tobogganing.
