Map of Eschenlohe

background

The place is named after the former castle of the Counts of Eschenlohe at the southern end of the village in place of the St. Nikolaus chapel. The sphere of influence of the Counts of Eschenlohe extended to the south in the Ultental in South-Tirol and in the north up Murnau and Andechs. The counts had their heyday in the 13th century, but died out as early as the 14th century.

Eschenlohe hit the headlines across Germany in 1999 due to the Whitsun flood and in 2005 due to the devastating August flood of the Loisach.
