Ultental - Ultental

The Ultental (Italian Val d'Ultimo) lies in the Ortler Alps in South-Tirol. The alpine valley is a hiking paradise in summer and access to the Stelvio National Park. The small but high altitude and therefore snow-sure ski area Schwemmalm is still an insider tip in winter.

background

The Ultental extends from the headwaters of the Valschauer Baches above the Weißbrunner Alm im Stelvio National Park at a height of approx. 2500 m over a length of approx. 40 km to the northeast to the confluence of the Falschauer at Lana in the Etsch (approx. 300 m above sea level) While the valley is still quite narrow in the lower part (gorge of the Gaul gorge near Lana), it widens in the middle part and the valley floor becomes wider. The water from the Falschauer is used in numerous reservoirs for a total of five hydropower plants.

The origin of the name lies in the dark of history, the Italian translation with "ultima", which means something like "last valley", is not applicable.

First settlements in the valley are for 1000 BC. occupied. In 1082 the then fully populated valley is taken over by the Benedictine monastery Weingarten in Swabia, medieval feudal lords were the Counts of Ulten at their castle St. Pankraz;

A Mark for the region are the wooded valley flanks made of larch stands and the abundant alpine pastures.

Farmhouse in St. Moritz

While in the lower part of the valley, close to Merano, the "modernity" found its way very early, until a few years ago the valley was still a strongly agricultural problem area in the middle and upper part with low economic power and a declining population. A positive effect for today's visitor is that the alpine "yodelling architecture" that is common elsewhere has not yet found its way here, and so many ancient farms have been preserved in their historical structures almost unaltered. The rear part of the Ulten Valley is therefore one of the most pristine and pristine valleys in South Tyrol.
