Stelvio National Park

The Stelvio National Park (Italian: Parco Nazionale dell Stelvio) is located in the Ortler Alps in Northern Italy.

The alpine national park essentially corresponds to the entire Ortler-Cevedale massif, it extends from the natural areas in the valley floors to heights of 3899 m (Ortler).

The National Park House "Naturatrafoi" is located in Trafoi, directly on the Stilfserjochstrasse.

The symbol of the park is the golden eagle.

history

First considerations for the protection of the nature of the Ortler area already existed at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1935 the entire area on the Ortler with 96,000 hectares became a national park, the regulation took place in 1951. In 1977 the park was expanded again to now 134,620 area. Most of the park is in South-Tirol, some side valleys are in the Trentino. Also the lombardic Provinces of Sondrio and Breschia are part of this national park.

The most important link within the park is that Stelvio Pass Road, it connects Bormio in the Valtellina With Prad in the Vinschgau. At 2,757 m, the Stilfser Joch is the second highest road pass in the Alps.
