Sterzing (Ital. Vipiteno) lies immediately south of the burner. The historic alpine town is the capital of the Wipptals and advertise itself as that Gate closed South-Tirol.

The first traces of settlement can already be found in prehistoric times. The settlement of Vipitenum is documented under the Romans. Sterzing is on a branch of the historical Amber Road over the burner.

The German name Sterzing was first mentioned in a document in 1180. The place received city rights under Count Meinhard II in 1280 and was significantly expanded. The city is the crossroads of trade routes for the important Alpine crossings via Brenner, Jaufenpass as well Penserjoch. Far-reaching trade privileges are the basis for economic upswing.

In the Middle Ages, Sterzing was an important trading town under the Fuggers. From the 15th century, the mining / mining of silver in Ridanna an important source of income.
