background

Map of Trento

Trento lies at a broad point in the Adige valley and is surrounded by mountains that reach a height of 2000 m. The place was a Celtic foundation. The Romans changed the Celtic name "Trent" to "Tridentum". In the Middle Ages the rulership changed several times. Trento was important in the time of the prince-bishops because of that Council of Trent (1545-1563). Under the rule of Napoleon the prince-bishops lost their power, then Trento came to Austria, and after the First World War the city with its surrounding area and South Tyrol fell to the Kingdom of Italy.

Between Bolzano and Trento has been the German-Italian language border for centuries. Johann Wolfgang Goethe had with his Italian trip (1786) from Trient "for the first time a stockwelschen postillon" and in the next town, Rovereto, spoke "the landlord no German". Around 1900 the contrast was emphasized by demonstrative monument building projects: for the German Walther von der Vogelweide in Bozen, for the Italian Dante Alighieri in Trento (Piazza Dante, in the green area by the train station). The Italian Alps were hotly contested in World War I, as a museum and two large monuments in Rovereto are reminiscent of. In Trento there are two monuments to political “martyrs” of the pro-Italian movement: a small one in the moat of the Castello del Buonconsiglio (place of execution) and the mausoleum on the Doss Trento, visible from afar. The fascist government under Benito Mussolini then deliberately pushed the language border north and Italianized the city of Bolzano in particular through resettlement and large building projects. Today, Trentino benefits from the autonomy statute of the Trentino-South Tyrol region, which South Tyrol in particular fought for after the Second World War.
